Depends on the type of bra and manufacturer you're buying.
Most Panache & Freya bras have thin straps, but yet still give good support. I highly recommend them.

I read a bra fitting article once that said most of the support should come from the band -- not the straps. I was surprised by that so it stuck with me.
I am kind of surprised and annoyed that the bra companies have not caught on to the fact that skinny strapped tops are the trend right now.

I've hear that too, but all of my bras except 1 have the thick straps. I can't think if the brand of the thin one. The thick ones don't slip off though, which is good.

I wasn't that huge (36DD) while I PG and I wore Vanity Fair and still do now. The straps are a regular thickness and not thick at all. I do know that some of their larger sizes also have thinner straps too.

Re: Why do large bras have to have such thick straps!!!!!!!!!
Only 10% of support comes from the straps of a bra. However, the strap has to get larger in proportion with the rest of the bra. You cannot have a larger cup and base/band without raising the strap. But this also depends on the coverage of the bra as well. If you are buying a demi, the strap will be thin, but if buying a full coverage the strap will be thick as the wings and cups are bigger.
That said, I am this size as well and have found numerous thin strapped bras at Bloomies in Huntington- Calvin Klein, Wacoal, DKNY, Chantelle and Natori. You should try there. Hope this helps!

Re: Why do large bras have to have such thick straps!!!!!!!!!
i wish i was "blessed" in this department. i've actually heard the straps aren't supposed to be holding the girls up, but the cups and the band should be doing most of the "work." i guess the straps are to keep everything from falling down

I SWEAR by Lane Bryant Bras, I won't shop for my bras anywhere else.
Though I wouldn't say that the straps are necessarily thin...
