Why do minivans have the shifter near the steering wheel?

Why do minivans have the shifter near the steering wheel?
And not on the floor?
Just curious. We started looking at them and it seems to weird to me.

I know that Dodge sometimes have the shifter on the wheel, too. If you are talking about Town & Country, that is under the Dodge Umbrella.

I think the idea of the minivan is to move around the vehicle without obstructions. Even from the passenger side, the shifter would be in the way if it was on the floor.

Agreed. Also, it's a wider vehicle, so rather than fill up that middle console area with stuff, it's easier to put it on the steering wheel.
For the "families" it's easier to go and grab the kid too!
