Why do people leave their attached garage open?
I live in Suffolk and I notice a lot of people leave their attached garage open. For hours. Do you do this? If so, why do you do it?
I always wonder aren't people afraid of bugs, rodents, squirrels, bats, raccoons, cats, intruders, etc, entering the garage and then possibly getting into the house?

Why do people leave their attached garage open?
since you put it that way maybe I'll close it more often.......
I usually I"m working outside when it's open

I only close mine when I'm not home and at night. I actually have forgotten to close it a few nights  and all was still well in the morning.

Why do people leave their attached garage open?
I never see this on LI. In Florida, all the time. DH leaves it open when he's doing yardwork but he's usually in the vicinity. If he goes inside, he closes it.

We leave ours open usually during the weekend all day since DH is usually doing yard work and going in and out of it constantly

Everyone in my neighborhood leaves their garage door open 24/7. I think it's so odd lol. I would be afraid people would steal stuff. I mean, it's not hard to break into a garage so if they wanted to steal your junk they could but I feel like leaving the door open is like an invitation to do so. Also, my garage is a disaster, I would be too embarrassed to leave the door open for all the neighbors to see.

I live in Northern Westchester and I leave it open alot for a few reasons:
when the kids are home. They come in and out of the garage looking for balls, bikes, etc. We live on a cul-de-sac with 25 kids so they don't always appear to be outside, but they are there - somewhere.
when i'm working in the garden in the back yard. We don't have a shed (yet) and tried to put a door from the back yard into the garage but the gas line is there, so we walk around to the front.
when I'm in and out running errands. I don't use my front door - I come in and out of the garage so if I'm running in and know I'm going back out in an hour or so I just leave it open.
I've left it open over night a few times by accident which was stupid because there is no lock on my interior door. I'm more conscious now of making sure it's closed if I'm in shower or sleeping. ALso in the high heat I tend close it to keep out the hot air.

Why do people leave their attached garage open?
for me it's just easier to go in get something out put something in etc. The weekend, like most say getting tools out for yard work.

I leave mine open. Cross ventilation helps cool the inner wall of the house.

my neighbor leaves it open when theyre home and will have company. When its closed theyre out, or its not a good time :)

My DH keeps it open sometimes to get some cooler air into the garage. There is no insulation so the garage gets very hot - causing the rooms adjacent to the garage to get hot as well.

Us too.
Mostly because on days when we're home, one of is us is always coming or going. Just seems easier I guess, and less wear & tear on the garage motor to not constantly open & close it. Also, our garage is in the back of the house - No one from the street can see whether it's open or not - just our 3 neighbors whose yards surround our back yard/garage area.

We have a wall ac that vents into the garage so we open the garage when that ac is on.

Sometimes we leave ours open when we are outside - some toys are in there and if we are working around the house what we need is in there. Also, I like to air it out sometimes.

Our neighbor does this all the time..we never leave it open...the handful of times it's been open for more than a few minutes was when we were working in there and wanted the light/air or when we needed to take things to/from the backyard or something...

I always wonder this too. A lot of people in my town seem to leave theirs open (attached or detached) even when they're not home. I am way too much of a nervous nelly to do that!

we leave ours open because we are usually in and out of it.
But Even if the door is closed bugs rodents whatever can still get in. So a wide open door is not stopping anything

Yes. This is what I was going to say.
Also, in my neighborhood the garages do not have separate entrances to the house. So intruders couldn't get in the house that way, although they could steal a lawn mower or tools or whatever else is left in the garage.

We keep ours open so DS can go in and out and get his toys at his leisure (that's pretty much the majority of what's in there). We don't have a door from the garage to the house though.

Because people like my DH forget to close it  He just called me, thinking that I left after him this morning, and was going to blame the garage being open all day on me  until I reminded him that as I was backing out of the driveway, he got out of his truck and asked me to hit my remote opener so he could go back into the garage for something.
