Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

UGH!!!! Vent time.

DH works with a bunch of finance guys who have a lot of money. I purposelly put some high price items on my registry for these people, b/c they always go over the top in the gifts department. Well, instead of that being a good thing for us they are now telling DH that they are going to buy us some really expensive Swedish changing table and some top of the line monitor. I told DH we HAVE a changing table and if we got a second one I don't need it to be some really expensive one!! WASTE OF MONEY. Also, I REALLY want a video monitor so please buy the one I have on my registry and not the non-video monitor that costs double!!!

People are hell bent on buying us what they THINK we need instead of what I have clearly outlined on our registry. Why do people do this????

And don't get me started on a certain Aunt of DH's who never buys off of registries...she is known for getting the worst gifts, and I know she gets things out of the kindness of her heart, but PLEASE just buy what I need and not something that is going to sit in a corner or go in the trash.

some people are fundamentally against registries in general. Hopefully you can return what you don't want and get what you'll use more.

Chat Icon i guess people think they know best on what to give LOL, i agree with you, we do have our registries for a reason, one of my DH's old co-workers asked DH if i was having a shower b/c she had a gift for me, meanwhile at the time nothing was bought off my registry, a close girlfriend also said the same thing to me recently, that she was so excited to give me the babies gift (which again i knew wasnt off the registry), nothing you cn do but be gracious, smile , and say thank you (as you shove the changing table your DH work poeple are getting you into the closetChat Icon )

I got aggrivated with my first pregnancy because we got alot that wasn't on our registery. Thankfully we were able to return most of it to BRU or Target for store credit.

Re: Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

I had this gripe at my wedding. It's like, why do you go through ALL the trouble of researching and picking things out that you want from the place you want if people aren't going to buy from there?

I mean, we do all the work for them!! All they have to do is point and click if buying on-line, or go to the store and say... "I need this" and be done with it!

Re: Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

I had that discussion with 2 of my co-workers the other day. They just think they should buy what "THEY" like. I still don't understand. WHY????

I told them NOT to buy me stuff not the registry because it would be a waste. They looked at me like I had 4 heads.

Right....it does not get much easier.

(Although I am guilty of deviating from the registry...a dear friend got a Tiffany place setting from me for her first child instead of something off her registry. Her family RAVAGED the registry in like 2 days & there was nothing reallt left. I got her a GC in case, but felt bad not getting an actual gift. But she told me she'd take something from Tiffany anyday, so all's good Chat Icon )

I could've said this myself. DH's family is infamous for doing things like this - buying things for Jackson that are totally useless. MIL bought Jackson a Royal Daulton china set for my shower. CHINA! For an infant!!!!! W....T..... FFFFFFF???? How about buying something off the registry - something I actually NEEDED and not something that is now sitting in a kitchen cabinet collecting dust!

DH's grandmother is always sending these fancy old-timey baby outfits that make me want to hurl. They will NEVER get used, and always wind up in the bag that goes to Goodwill. And she even told DH this about the latest outfit, "Well, I know y'all probably won't like that outfit but I just HAD to buy it". Well how about buying it and sending a GIFT RECEIPT so I can exchange it for something that I actually WANT!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry, you can tell this is a HUGE sore point for me. I feel your pain!!!! Chat Icon

i can't speak for everyone but i know some people, (my mom for example doesn't drive on highways etc) and we don't have a Fortunoff in Brooklyn so whenever someone registers there, unless take her to get a gft, she gives money...

Sorry to intrude here and please don't flame me..

But a gift is a gift. It does NOT have to be off a registry. Yes you register for a reason. Most family and friends will pick stuff from it, and that will be that. But especially when it comes to business associates...they don't always think to go to a registry and pick out something...maybe they thought it was a nice, useful gift that would be appreciated.

I'm not discrediting everything you wrote, I know the feeling of annoyance but an unwanted gift is at least a gift...someone is thinking of you and doing something for your family. Try to think of it that way.

Re: Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

I do not always buy on registries, but I would not pick an item that is the same type of thing that is on the registry or is something that the person is likely to buy for themselves. If someone registers for a monitor, they are probably going to get that monitor and I won't go and pick a different one. When I go off registries, it is usually for something personalized or unique or if the person has not put a lot on the registry in the first place.

I understand and agree to some degree BUT it's like buying jewerly or clothes for someone. Everybody has different taste and you take a chance by buying something not on the registry to have the gift disgarded.

This is my honest answer on this.

Of course that's the thought that counts but why would I keep something that will collect dust and become clutter if I don't like it.

Re: Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

Yeah, dont get me started either!!!!
Registries were created to make gift giving for such a life changing even easy.

I hardly got anything off my registry at all! Instead, I wound up with a wardrobe of clothes that came with no gift receipts.
To top it off, Taylor came out as such a little peanut that the clothes probably won't even fit when they are in season for her.
I know I shouldnt be so harsh, people give gifts out of the kindness of their heart, but come on, I didn't even get a set of bottles....i did get nipples for them though....figure that one out!Chat Icon

I actually agree with both of these, if that is possible.

My gripe is when people buy stuff that IS on the registry from another store or website. Like my MIL and the pnp, not only am I stuck with a pnp that I dont really like, but BRU won't take back the one on my registry b/c they don't sell the pattern thereChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Why do people NOT buy off the registry???

Hmmm if I am not going to buy from a registry I make sure it is something returnable, and only if I know the person well enough - and it's usually something from the registry and something not.

People like to think they are doing something "special" but I know what you mean -- maybe DH can tell them you have those items already? I would think a generous gift card would be the best option...!
