why does Jake not like gymboree?

Jake is now 18 months old and we just started Gymboree Class. When we get there he cries and just wants to be held by me. He has NO interest in playing. Do you think it is a phase that he is going through.
Today I just couldn't take it anymore and I just left after 15 minutes.
I hate to waste all the money on the class, but I just can't take him not wanting to play and want to be held all the time. He does get weid around strangers, but he should grow out of the soon right?????????

I am not a parent but this is a subject we are talking about right now in our Child Development class. In the 16-20 month (I believe that is the range) age group children go through a separation anxiety phase, which they will out grow. So I would say that it is just a phase.

Thanks. But I am there at the class with him and not leaving him. He must feel more secure in my arms then. I wish I know this before I spent all the $$ on the class
