Why don't people dress up anymore?

I really don't think this belongs on the fashion board, despite the title of this tread Chat Icon

DH, my folks and I went to a very nice restaurant for dinner last night. on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the fanciest of places), I would rate it an 8.

why is it that some people feel it is ok to come to a really nice place like that in sweatpants or jeans? Chat Icon I mean seriously! most of the men were in collared shirts and some even had a suit & tie on. 1 guy had a GREY SWEATSUIT on, the kind you wear to go running and a few other people were in jeans.

I personally LIKE to get dressed up every now and then to go out for dinner. I'm not saying you have to wear a suit or a gown, but come on! Chat Icon

I know what you mean. I'm shocked when I go to Broadway shows and see people in jeans. DH told me that he once went on a job interview and the person in front of him had on nice jeansChat Icon They were nice, but he was still shocked. I think our culture has become more casual, considering that even many Wall Street firms are business casual.

This is a peeve of mine, too. We went to a Broadway show about 2 years ago. It was summer, lots of tourists, but I don't care if you drove here all the way from Alaska...you don't go to the theatre in daisy dukes and flip flops. Chat Icon

I completely understand what you are saying.

I agree I LOVE getting dressed up..I would never wear a sweatsuit to dinner..no matter what type of place..Like I said that is just me..But really some people need to get their fashion dilemmas straightened out.

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?

You are totally right, no one dresses up for anything anymore.

My friend's mom went to the OPERA, yes, the OPERA, and she people in jeans!!!!

I love dressing up and take pride in it, I guess some people don't feel like putting forth the effort anymore.

Oh, and church too, my dad sneers at people in sweats at church.....Chat Icon

I don't like getting dressed up but I dress appropriately for places that warrant dressing up.

I don't know why someone would want to spend a lot of money on a meal or show sitting in sweatpants.

I know, this bothers me too. DH and I dress up all of the time. Society is just so different now.

I agree with a lot of the other places, but I feel like so few people make the effort to go to church anymore I'm just happy they are there, regardless of what they are wearing.

This irks me too. I think it's nice to dress up for special occasions, and it kind of annoys me when people schlep around in everyday clothes on the holidays as well. I still think about a wedding I went to once where a guy looked like he had just come from a construction site: he had on jeans and a sweatshirt that were covered in dirt and paint. DH just commented about this very thing this morning. As we were leaving church service we saw a young woman come in with a small child and she had on TIGHT jeans in CHURCHChat Icon She was with her MIL and it was clear that MIL (dressed to the nines) did not approve.

We went to see Avenue Q a while back and saw many people in jeansChat Icon I was so glad that I had DH wear something nice. Maria Bartiromo (sp?) from CNBC (or CNN?) was there as was that clean freak actor from Monk. They were well dressed but at least 30% of the audience had on jeans.Chat Icon

I know! We always used to get dressed up for the holidays, now when we go to Church it's rare to see everyone all dressed. I was just at a funeral a few weeks ago and there was about 5 people w/ jeans on. I would never!

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?

I completely agree! It drives me nuts when I see people in jeans at broadway shows, at fancy restaurants, and at synagogue. When I go to temple, I see children in jeans and/or sweats. I never even went in pants as a child, only skirts and dresses.

I have seen jeans at several funerals within the past year and it absolutely disgusts me more than any place else in this world. I think it is total disrespect to show up to a wake or funeral in jeans. Couldn't take five minutes to put a pair of khakis on...or even black jeans for that matter, but stonewashed, cut up jeans and a sloppy shirt...Arghhh!!

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?

IMO, sweatpants don't belong anywhere except at home. I don't understand how anyone walks outside in them. And those pajama pants too. I think it's just terrible to be seen in public like that - my mom would never had let me out of the house wearing sweatpants.

DH and I have season tickets at the Met, and I'm always surprised how people dress. I tend to dress down a little bit if we are going to a matinee (I'll wear nice pants and a nice top, sometimes a nice skirt) but when we go to an evening performance, I love to dress it up. But I see people wearing sweatshirts/pants, jeans and tshirts....
