Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
I somewhat agree with what everyone is saying. I feel like you shouldn't go to a fancy restaurant in sweats, however I would go in a nice pair of jeans, a nice top, and heels. I've gone to a broadway show like that as well.

IMO, sweatpants don't belong anywhere except at home. I don't understand how anyone walks outside in them. And those pajama pants too. I think it's just terrible to be seen in public like that - my mom would never had let me out of the house wearing sweatpants.
I don't necessarily agree with this though. I have to get dressed up for work every day, and when I get home, the first thing I do, is put on sweats. I go shopping, run errands, and pretty much live in sweats outside of work. I always look put together though.

I also do not see anything wrong with sweats outside of the house. Abercrombie, NY & Co, even Ann Taylor Loft, have nice sweats that are so cute. You can still look put together. I mean, I'd never wear hubby's sweats out in public, I save those for when I am sick and not leaving the house, but I run errands in cute sweats all the time.
In fact, my friends joke that I should have become a gym teacher rather than an English teacher because it is rare that I am dressed up to hang out. I wear nice clothes to work every day and also for occassions such as today, but I need my comfort.

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
i agree with most of what has been said--to wear jeans to a wedding, funeral, etc. is rude and tasteless.
however, i'm going to easter dinner tonight in jeans and a nice sweater. i'm not even wearing heels. there's no point since everyone in my family will also be in jeans--it's just what we do. we'll be in the house, not at a fancy restaurant.
if however, we were going out or if the company i was with was dressed up, i would dress up. but to wear a dress today would make me stick out and i would feel

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
I wore jeans today, but I hosted and spent most of my time in the kitchen (98% of it. ) I can't wait for someone else to host so I can get dressed up!
That being said, I agree with Vicki. You wouldn't catch me out in sweatpants unless I was working out/running. (I don't care what the label says or how much they cost...you look like a "schlub" in them no matter what.)
I see nothing wrong with "dressy" jeans, depending on the event/location. I remember always getting dressed up to go out and feeling over dressed because most were in jeans. Would I wear them to an interview or funeral...no, but I've worn them to concerts & fancier restaurants.

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
Perhaps you look like a "schlub" in them or feel that you do, but I happen to pull them off quite nicely thank you very much.
I think that they look better on me than jeans. I think jeans are sloopy looking on me and they never fit me right.
I have one "sweat suit" that I even wear with heels because it is made with a nice knit material and matching top is far from just a sweatshirt. I get compliments on it every time I wear it.
To each their own, but to say that you look like a "schlub" no matter what the label says is a little rude IMO.

I say this all the time! No one dresses up anymore. It is very sad how lazy our society has become.

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
Oh I am so right there with you. And now that I am PG I have less tolerance for people who do not put forth the effort (I think along the lines of...if my PG fat a$$ can squeeze into pantyhose, your scrawny a$$ certainly can)
I hate when people do not dress appropriately - it is such a lack of respect!
ETA: I went to a wedding Satuday & was APPAULED at how many people were wearing "business casual" type attire to a Sat Night wedding at the Vanderbilt mansion. It was not a casual wedding....

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
I agree with weddings and funerals and cannot comment on the religious services, but I don't think it's such a bad mark on our society. It actually shows that people are relaxing and enjoying life (If you enjoy dressing up, that's OK, but how wonderful that people have a choice).
Just think how the women of the 20's felt when they got rid of their corsets and hairdos for shorter, looser fitting clothes and bob haircuts. I think the freedom of what to wear is a wonderful thing.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the relaxing thing. wearing jeans or sweats to a Diner or TGI Friday's is one thing, but IMO, if you wear that out to a fancy dinner it just tells everyone "hey look at me, I'm lazy and inappropriate"!
I'm not talking about jeans and a dressy top with heels. I'm talking about jeans, a casual top and sneakers.

Re: Why don't people dress up anymore?
DH and I went to a nice steakhouse for our anniversary and there was a couple of women wearing juicy sweatsuits and uggs at the table next to us.
IMO, that was too trashy. I don't care if your sweatsuit cost more than my outfit, I don't want to see the crack of your a** when I'm enjoying a very nice and expensive meal. The restaurant shouldn't have let them in.

I don't think of these as sweats, I am thinking Hanes style.
