Why don't people return things they borrow???

My neighbor borrowed a platter from me in May for her daughter's Communion party and hasn't returned it. I stop by their house on Saturday b/c we were having our annual block party and it's out on her table with food on it! I didn't want to say anything b/c her guests were there, but DUH!!!!

We let a friend borrow our wet/dry vac about 6 months ago. Yeah, see ya wet/dry vac. We just bought a replacement last month.

Another friend borrowed a suitcase in March. Ya think you could drop it off one day?

I won't even mention the friend who borrowed my cupcake tower a year ago and broke it!! I'm sooooo kidding on that one!!!

If we borrow something, we return it ASAP. Is it just me?? Do people assume these are gifts?

People are so rude..I really try not to borrow..I usually just go out an purchase what i need.

I had a friend once borrow a pair of Calvin Klein pants and months later we went out and she was just wearing them. When I asked when she was going to return them she said she assumed I didn't miss them and that they were hers now.

Ooooh this is a pet peeve of mine also. If I borrow something from someone (including money, but also things), I worry about it until I give it back. I always assumed other people would feel the same way, but apparently that's not the case.

I haven't had this happen with something big, but I let this girl borrow a book of mine like 2 years ago, and she hasn't given in back. She's the nicest girl in the world, so I can never yell at her, but it really got to me. She would always say oh I forgot I will give it to you next time I see you, but that never happened. Now I don't see her anymore at work, so I will never see the book again.

Kathi, I saw this post and realized I have the cupcake tower in my trunk, everytime I go to Seaford for Scrapbooking I forget to drop it off.

I AM SO EMBARRASSED!!!!! I am so sorry. are you home duirng the day this week, so I can come and drop it off on my lunch?

Yes people should absolutely return things.

Why are you buying replacements? A wet/dry vac?

If they don't make the effort, call them & tell them you need it & will be coming over for it.

I have family that does this too me and DH too.

BIL borrowed something of DH. When Dh went down there to get it he saw it in the Trash!!!! BIL broke it and didn't even bother to tell DH. DH was so pizzzed off that he left without saying anything to them.

Sis and BIL also did the same thing to my mom. She lent them a table and the left it outside all winter. By the time summer rolled around and my mom wanted to use it, it was trashed because it was weather beaten.

I would have SO asked for that platter back - right in front of her guests. I wouldn't care! that is SO rude!

Why don't you just ask these people if you can come pick up whatever it is they borrowed?

You didn't have to mention it to your friend at the party, but you could have come by the next day to say "I need to grab my platter back, can I come by this afternoon to get that?"

ETA - It seems from your posts that you just go out and buy a replacement rather than ask for it back. Some people forget they have these things and you just have to ask.

That sux! I dont borrow things from people all that much bc I worry about returning them so I guess Im not on your list LOL I do resent things not being returned though...I like to consider myself a generous person but rude things like not returning a big item someone borrowed months ago would just get under my skin so badly.

My SIL is a very generous person with her things. She lent her neighbor tons of my nephew's baby gear when the neighbor's daughter had twin boys. One day she saw her neighbor put out a lot of garbage for the trash pick up and many of the items was the baby gear SHE LENT HER!! The husband saw her taking them items out of the trash and said "I told Mary to offer you some of that stuff before she threw it out" My SIL said "That's pretty generous considering it is my stuff" So obnoxious!!!!!

You are very nice to be so generous with your items, I'm sorry that people seem to take advantage of your generosity **HUGS**

ETA: You just refreshed my resentment at my friend Dawn who borrowed my Aerosmith Live Bootleg album in HS I'm still waiting for it to come back, even if I don't have a turntable anymore

I lent something to someone today (a rented video) and then I saw it lying around a classroom, where anyone could have taken it. I was pretty annoyed.

My friends and I borrow clothing from each other and never return it. I tell them to come to NY and get it themselves...so far only one taker. I still have a friends sweater from 12 years ago, she has my shoes from about 6 years ago.

I have a friend who never returnes what he borrows. If I never want to see it again, he can borrow it - if it is something I want - it's off limits.

I am usually good at returning what I borrow and try to return it in better condition than it came.

I borrowed a blanket and washed it before returning....that's just how I am.
