Re: Why is everything so expensive

I used to waste a ton of food. Now I go to the store a few times a week. I only buy produce for 2-3 days at a time.
I do too, 2x a week and DH will run out as needed.
I have found that meal planning makes a huge difference. For a long time I tried to plan once a week, for the week, and it was hard. I'd do it for a week and then forget, or find it overwhelming. Ironically planning for a full month at a time is easier. It allows me to plan to use leftovers and I also have theme nights which is helpful for planning.
Sunday- slow cooker, doubled Monday- leftovers from Sunday Tuesday- tacos Wednesday- chicken or pasta Thursday- soup/salad/sandwiches Friday- entree salads Saturday- go out, order out or cook something fun and unhealthy
I do not like to cook but this way it's minimized. For example, on taco night I just do a lot of chopping, maybe grill some chicken or cook frozen fish for fish tacos. Or we just go meatless.

If you have an Aldi nearby try them. They just announced they are expanding their organic foods.
I agree! I started shopping Aldi a few months ago and while I hardly ever bought organic shopping at stop and shop or shop rite because it was so expensive, I buy mostly organic at Aldi and my shopping bill is way less than it used to be.
An Aldi's opened up by me last spring and we noticed very quickly how much lower our food shopping bills are now. I don't buy everything there, but the fruits/veggies are much cheaper than regular grocery stores. They also use fewer dyes and preservatives in some of their foods. in December I found holiday-shaped ravioli that had been dyed with beet juice and spinach extracts. My kids loved them, and they were less than $3.
And they are owned by the same company that owns Trader Joes.

Could buying things like the milk in bulk online save you some money? Its wrong how expensive organic is. Trader Joes has some better prices and Fairway has some great prices on organic. Maybe buying less friends and veggies than you think you need would be better?

I buy very small quantities of quality items. We go to Wegmens mostly (similar to Fairway in NY). Sometimes I will only buy 1 apple or 2 plums because I know that is all we will eat within the next 2-3 days. I like Trader Joe's frozen food section.

Re: Why is everything so expensive
Well, the long answer is political so I'll just avoid that
BUT
I agree, meal planning helps, buying smaller amounts of perishables and buying on sale or in bulk definitely helps.
I rotate where I shop - Target (with the RedCard and Cartwheel) is great for pantry stock ups. When I do a Target run, I'll buy my produce and meat and Meat Farms - no one is cheaper, IMO.
If I do ShopRite, I go when they have a really great sale, Can Can sale, etc. They are my favorite. Foodtown just opened by me but their prices are iffy.
I try not to do Stop and Shop because the produce selection isn't great, but they sometimes have a decent sale. Last night I found a mark-down section and got tons of dried beans to make soups for 75 cents each.
We usually do 1 BJ's run per month and stock up there for paper/household goods and snacks, and always with coupons.

We also went in on a local organic grass fed cow with some girls from my breastfeeding group and it worked out to about $6/lb
Where was this?
we got it from 8oclock ranch. If you want more info, PM me.

Why is everything so expensive
Question for the organic-buying people who shop at Aldi: What organic items do you find there? What are your favorite items?
I've never been to Aldi because the nearest one is about a half hour drive, but I will go and check it out soon if it has a lot of organic food at awesome prices!

Clearly meal planning is the way to go… I just have to now set aside some time so that I can start doing that ....
