Why oh why did my doctor give that to me...
When I had Lucas they were asking me about the antibiotics I have taken in the past. If any names sounded familiar. I told them I was allergic to PCN. They asked me how severe. I told them I didn't know just that my mother has always told me not to take it, so I listened. (turns out I had broken out in bad hives when I was little and took it, found that out after the fact). But before they operated my anasteg. asked my doc what I took the last time I had a C. After checking the chart he came back and said ANCEF with no adverse reaction. Not knowing they had given me something related to PCN I said OK. Im not the MD. That is why you get the big bucks. You know what I don't. So in the recovery room my BP dropped and I start bleeding heavily... turns out it was the ANCEF. I am in 10% of the pop who is hypersensitive to it. Now why would they even attempt to give me something that could cause a severe reaction in the first place?
I got this from DailyMed it is a WARNING about ANCEF
BEFORE THERAPY WITH ANCEF IS INSTITUTED, CAREFUL INQUIRY SHOULD BE MADE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE PATIENT HAS HAD PREVIOUS HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS TO CEFAZOLIN, CEPHALOSPORINS, PENICILLINS, OR OTHER DRUGS. IF THIS PRODUCT IS GIVEN TO PENICILLIN-SENSITIVE PATIENTS, CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED BECAUSE CROSS-HYPERSENSITIVITY AMONG BETA-LACTAM ANTIBIOTICS HAS BEEN CLEARLY DOCUMENTED AND MAY OCCUR IN UP TO 10% OF PATIENTS WITH A HISTORY OF PENICILLIN ALLERGY. IF AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO ANCEF OCCURS, DISCONTINUE TREATMENT WITH THE DRUG. SERIOUS ACUTE HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS MAY REQUIRE TREATMENT WITH EPINEPHRINE AND OTHER EMERGENCY MEASURES, INCLUDING OXYGEN, IV FLUIDS, IV ANTIHISTAMINES, CORTICOSTEROIDS, PRESSOR AMINES, AND AIRWAY MANAGEMENT, AS CLINICALLY INDICATED.
OMG if they werent watching me I don't know if I would be here right now!!!

Re: Why oh why did my doctor give that to me...
As a pharmacist, I would never allow a doctor to give Ancef to a patient who got hives from penicillin. Like you said there is only a small percentage of people who are allergic to both (called a cross sensitivity) but with hives to pencillin, there is a good chance that patient is in that small percentage. The reason for this is that they are both very similar in chemical structure. From now on be sure to also tell all medical professionals that you are allergic to cephalosporins as well as penicillins.
