Why would a ped reccomend swiching to soy formula ???
As I posted the other day, my DD ( 4 weeks old) has been having gas and constipation issues without any reflux or vomiting...Brought her to the ped ( actually saw a NP, not the ped) and she told me to switch her to a soy formula for 5-7 days and bring her back if no improvement- next step would be prune juice and I could also use Mylicon in the interim...I asked why not maybe try another milk based formula ( ex: Similac Sensitive, Gentlease etc...) and she said - if it had been gas only yes, but because DD is constipated, soy would be the next step ...So I left there kinda doing one of these ....
My DH isnt comfortable with switching to soy unless its absolutely necessary ( he has heard mixed reports on soy consumption with adults) and I don't know much about soy at all...We decided to try Similac Sensitve ( I had some coupons) and see how it goes- Is anyone else's DC on soy and if so why ????....My DD isnt allergic to milk , the NP said she may be sensitive , not allergic....So confused here

Every ped. is different. My DD had the same problems at the same age, and we switched to Similac Sensitive...with much improvement. Our ped. actually recommends against soy if at all possible...
I agree with what you're trying first!

My was very similar actually, but with Gentlease.
Maybe the NP was thinking a milk allergy?

i agree with you... soy, IMO, should be a last resort.
if you don't see an improvement with the sim. sensitive you can always change later on.
good luck!

Re: Why would a ped reccomend swiching to soy formula ???
DD was switched to soy because she was having projectile vomit on reg. similac and seemed like she was in pain.
She still spit up on soy but it was more manageable and she wasnt in pain anymore.

Thats what I had asked the NP- if she felt she was "allergic"...and her answer was- "sensitive not allergic- 2 different things " I just hope the Similac Sensitive does the trick !

Yep, no vomiting here and I made it clear to her

Re: Why would a ped reccomend swiching to soy formula ???
Gavin's formula was switched so many times.....I don't even remember all of them! He was on soy for a very brief period because there wasn't enough marked improvement to warrant keeping him on it. But then again, he was just a happy spitter, no pain or discomfort. He didi best on Similac Sensitive though when his spitting was really bad......

Re: Why would a ped reccomend swiching to soy formula ???
DS had a lot of gas with similac advance but it went away with mylicon. However he spit up a lot. We called and the ped told us to try soy. When we realized it didn't help we swtiched back to the regular because I wasnt comfortable staying with soy when it wasnt making a huge difference. IMO some drs don't really know much about the different formulas out there so they stick with the basic regular or soy.
