Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
Now don't get me wrong I KNOW I need one, but I am having trouble getting my parents to see the light because they insist my 21 month old DD should be walking fulltime by then and its harmful for her development to keep her in a stroller. Can you guys help me with some real life examples from BTDT moms? I bought my double already but haven't bought theirs (they take care of my DD while I work full time).

Well, I'm not a BTDT yet but I'll tell you that my DD is 2.5 years old and still very happy in her stroller (and I'm thrilled to have her safe & contained in there when I need/want her to be). I'm debating whether to get a double stroller for when this baby comes, DD will be turning 3 right then too.
So tell them I'm even worse than you

Sure at that age DD will be walking well - but probably not for long periods of time.
I would say - any walks you take - I don't see a 21 month old walking a mile or more
shopping, so you can have DD under control and not have to chase her down in a store, while trying to maneuver a stroller with the infant
Outdoor festivals for the same reason above

I don't have 2 kids but at 21 months DS was not walking miles into the Mall and stores with me. So unless you plan on keeping your kids home when you do errands, you will need that stroller.
I also go on walks when the weather is nice. I do 30 minutes to 1 hour walks. I walk at my own pace. That's my little exercise. I would not get real exercise if I had to walk at DS' pace.

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
DD is 25 months and loves the stroller. Sometimes she wants to walk, but that doesn't last too long. I just got a double stroller for when DS is born, and I'm using it now as a single so I can get the most use out of it.
For us, I'm still going to be walking them to day care every day and I'm NOT going to be doing it at my DD's pace... I have enough trouble getting to work on time as it is!

If they want to take them out for a walk or a to a store a 21 month old doens't really walk very fast or want to go where you want to go. Also they are short and you have to bend down to hold their hands (at least I do) And they tire easily. In a stroller they can rest, have a snack and just generally get you where you need to go much quicker. I am all for strapping them in whenver possible.
I have 2 kids - almost 4 and almost 2 and we still use the double stroller. Not as much - but sometimes. My Mother uses it for them when she watches them too.

DD is 2.5yrs and I have a 4 month old and I am happy to have a double.
We go for long walks, especially in the summer. DD#1 loves to be in the stroller. She's a little too much of a runner if she's not, so it's nice to be able to walk without the worry of chasing after her everywhere.

DD will be 2.5 when this baby arrives and I will be getting a double stroller. She still needs to be contained!

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
I got into the same argument with DH. DD is now 3.5 and while I couldn't justify buying a new one because of her age I did buy my friend's sit n stand from her and we have gotten great use out of it already. DD walks just fine but when we are at places like the mall or the zoo or an amusent park she wants to sit from time to time and if she doesn't have the option then she starts to climb on me and whine to be picked up. Frankly I rather have a stroller that can provide a seat vs. carrying my toddler and pushing a stroller at the same time (and yes I have done that and it is not fun)
I would hold off on getting one for your parents let them see what a pain in the butt it would be.

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
It's a nice option My boys are 19 months apart and most days Ryan isn't loving the stroller - but depends where we are, or who he is with. My ILs are watching the kids now and Ryan and his cousin (who is 2.5) go for walks with grandpa in the double. I don't love using it with the attachment b/c when Ryan gets restless he kicks a lot and the attachment with Colin shakes. But, for walks and places like a museum - it's good to have, esp if you're on your own. Plus, Ryan isn't much of a hand holder so it's a necessity sometimes - otherwise I'm pushing the snap and go and carrying Ryan

My son is over 3 and I still got a double. I just didn't get an expensive one since I know I won't be using it forever.

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
I have a 16 month old and 29 month old and use my double stroller all the time. I think you should emphasize safety with your parents. It would be very difficult to shop with a newborn in a stroller and a 21 month old walking around. Also, 21 month olds get tired fast and how are you going to hold a 21 month old and push a stroller?

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
DD would not sit in stroller by 22 months at all- drove me nuts. Then her brother came along and now she HAS to be in the stroller too. Let your parents know they are in for a TON of tratrums on this issue, especially as she gets closer to 3. That should work

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
Well my girls are 23 months apart so from my experience for me - I found - that my DD LOVES to walk which is great - BUT:
-Sometimes she gets tired then if I don't have a double it I have to carry her AND push the baby
- Sometimes she doesn't want to leave the playground etc and I have to put her into the stroller b.c carrying a toddler with a tantrum home and pushing the baby isn't happening.
-At 23 months DD liked to run off and look at things when we took walks and so sometimes it is just easier to have her in a double so I have better control over her.
- Safety reasons - in parking lots etc you have keys, bags, stroller AND you are trying to hold your DC's hand - if you have the double it just makes it easier.
Now that DD is older (2.5 will be 3 in June) I find that having the stroller is just convenient. She rides in it to the playground then has the energy to run around for 2-3 hours then rides back home - when I bring DH or grandma or grandpa she insists on being carried home b.c she is too tired - this way she can just ride.
In stores it is just easier to put them both in rather than chase one around the store and push the other - This way I can have my eyes on both at all times.

Re: Why would you need a double stroller with a 21 month old and a baby
I didn't read the above answers so I apologize if this is all repeats Mine are 23 months apart. DS1 still napped in the stroller so whenever we went out, I had to make sure I had the double with me. Also, who wants to be running after a 21 (or in my case 23) month old when you have a newborn! Also, if we are at the zoo, mall, (anywhere actually!), DS would either want to be carried or would sit in the stroller. I chose the stroller

And people chewed me out when I wondered why a 5 year old needed a stroller. Now Im really laughing.
Seriously though. What are you supposed to do with your toddler when you have to change your baby and you are out?

not a BTDT, but i'd think if you had a 2 year old who was happy to be in the stroller, you'd be grateful !!! SO much easier for everyone. - You can still take long walks, go to the mall w/o having to worry, etc etc.
