WI is closing two schools?
That sucks! All those teachers laid off and more crowded schools?

Re: WI is closing two schools?
I agree about the layoffs, however it's my understanding that each the 6 elementary schools are currently only running at 50%-65% capacity and enrollment is projected to drop quite a bit in the next few years. So while I do feel badly for the staff members that are being let go, it does make a lot of sense & will save the district quite a bit of money in the long run. I attended W.I. as a kid & we had 7 elementary schools at the time. While I was there they closed 2 due to low enrollment & then eventually re-opened one of them. Were our classes more crowded as a result? Probably, but I honestly can't remember & don't feel as though my education suffered much as a result, so hopefully it will be the same for today's children. Kids tend to be resilient - I think it's the parents that are going to have a harder time with it

Re: WI is closing two schools?
Yes 2 elemantary schools are closing. But according to Simon the class sizes won't change too much because some schools have Kindegarden classes with only 15 students. Most buildings are not being utilized to capacity. In the end supposedly the buildings will be operating at capacity. I don't think too many teachers will be laid off because they are going to need those teachers at the remaining 4 schools. So hopefully, not too many will be laid off. I think it is going to hurt the administrative and janitorial staff more. Since the schools that are remaining open already have those positions filled.
I personally think it sucks especially since my school is probably going to be one of the ones that closes. I keep praying that we don't close but I don't have a good feeling.

Haha yes the last part is totally true...I didn't know the specifics since I only saw it on the News12 ticker...definitely makes sense!

Re: WI is closing two schools?
I think the meeting is tonight if I am not mistaken. I also heard that they are going to be rezoning the schools....We would be attending Westbrook but I hear that can changes. At this point I really dont mind because we will be starting K in Sept I think I would be a little more upset if I had children already in the schools..
Is anyone going to the meeting tonight?

Re: WI is closing two schools?
They are going to have to rezone with 2 schools closing. Tonight the board votes on which 2, but I am sure they know that already. I think in about 3 months we find out who will be going where. If Oquenock closes, I would assume I would go to Westbrook but who knows. I am not personally going to the meeting but I know a lot of people who are going.
It really does stink when you have a child in the school already because you have a connection with the faculty. I would assume everything is going to be switched up based on seniority of the staff.

I heard Smithtown is also considering closing schools. This is becoming a real concern

I was surprised to hear that Westbrook is closing - everyone had me convinced that it was going to be Oquenock! Kirdahy didn't surprise me though - that's one of the ones they closed when I was a kid. Being that it's literally right next door to Bayview it makes sense...the families w/kids that go there will probably have an easier time with the change when it comes to busing, etc.

Not Kirby, Captree.
Is Captree no longer called Captree? Is it wrong if that's the case and I live in WI and didn't know this?

It was renamed to Paul E. Kirdahy a few years ago...I believe he used to be a principal there. Call me nostalgic (or old), but I miss the old Native American names

Yes Nesconset Elementary. They have low enrollment. My mom read in the paper that 70% of Smithtown residents do not have school age children. THat is alot! They had low enrollement when I went to school there as well. THey closed schools.

To be honest I just moved into the district 3 years ago so I had no idea. If you look at the website it is Kirdahy @ Captree..

Re: WI is closing two schools?
Although my kids aren't even close to kindegarten yet, I was sad to hear that they are closing Westbrook We live right around the block and I liked that it was so close. I'm hoping we get rezoned to the one next to the HS. I don't know which is which besides Westbrook and Bayview.

Re: WI is closing two schools?
My boys were registered to start Westbrook for Sept. I was also sad. The school was close and even though they would be bused the would be home quickly. Now I have no idea where they are going to be placed and their ride home could be a lot longer. I am curious to see what happens.

Well, I guess this makes me feel a little better considering I only moved back here about two years ago.

The school you're thinking of is call Paul J. Bellew (pronounced blue - like the color).
