Wii Fit question from a Novice

So I am thinking of getting a Wii but know very little about it. If I want to use it for excercise I buy the Wii system and then the wii fit? Do you have to buy the wii fit to excercise or are there other games that are similar?

Do you need different controls or just the ones it comes with?

And finally - do you actually get a workout from it or is it just a fun game?

Thanks and sorry I know absolutely nothing about this (yes I have been living under a rock)

If you want to use it for exercise, you buy the Wii system, and then the Wii Fit, which comes with the game and the balance board. I'm not sure if there are other games that use the balance board besides the one that comes with it and the new Wii Fit Plus, but they have a bunch of exercise games that you don't need the Wii Fit for.

You need the controllers the Wii comes with and the joystick looking ones for some of the games (like boxing).

I definitely felt it works! There's all sorts of different games, cardio and strength training and balance. The hula hoop is an awesome workout and I love the boxing game.

Those are the best workouts for me as well. They also sell a riser for the Wii fit board to make it a little more challenging and actual boxing gloves to add a little weight. I don't know if it actually works because I'm pregnant and just gaining weight anyway but I definitely feel like I got a workout when i'm done. And I'll do 45 minutes without even noticing because the games are fun and make you forget you're exercising.

You can look into My Fitness Coach. It is a fitness game that doesn't require the board. I know there are other games but don't know if they require the board.

If you're looking to buy the wii for exercise purposes then I would say get Wii fit. Most exercise games will require the balance board and wii fit gives you a good workout. If you want to get serious about it there are better games but I think those require the board anyway.

You should also consider EA Active which "may" use the balance board for some exercises
