Will someone explain what SKYPE is to me (vs. a webcam)
Or is it the same thing. I have no clue.
Is there a monthly fee for SKYPE? Does it cost a lot to get it?

Skype is a service that allows you to speak via webcam and I believe its free.
Like my inlaws are in FL, have a webcam and talk to my BIL here in ny.
They are trying to set us up with it too.
ETA: i cant see it at work but was able to read that it states, Free Calls.

I use it to talk to my sister. I never had to pay anything and either did my sister. It is just the service that sends the webcam video and messages.
It is really easy to use.

So I just need to get a regular webcam then? Are there different ones -- is there one anyone would recommend?

Its a free international calling system through which you can use a camera to see and talk to the person on the other side at the same time. There is also a chat option. If you have a built-in webcam on your computer then you don't need a separate camera.

Re: Will someone explain what SKYPE is to me (vs. a webcam)
My DH pays to use Skype (minimal amount), but I don't know if it's related to the fact that he uses it when he's overseas because I don't pay a fee to use it domestically.
Skype is a program that utilizes a webcam, but you don't need a webcam. My DH and I used to use it just for the phone feature b/c it was cheaper to do it through the internet as opposed to using his cell phone (which could cost a couple of hundred dollars each time he called from China.)

Re: Will someone explain what SKYPE is to me (vs. a webcam)
I use it to talk to my family overseas. It's free and you can chat , make calls to a person's computer and connect your webcam. You can buy any webcam. You can ask a sales person at the store and they'll help you pick one out (there is no need to buy an expensive one). But if you just want to chat or talk to someone you don't need a webcam. And you don't need to buy a webcam if your computer already has a built in web cam.

Just make sure the webcam has a microphone b/c there are some that don't have that builtin feature.

Is he calling someone's landline or cell phone? Skype is free if you're calling someone else with Skype, but there's a small fee if you're calling someone's phone.
