I've been to Williamsburg and Norfolk. If you want to take it all in at Williamsburg - save 3-4 hours, so you can walk into each home and greet the family, and get tours of the home. Take the carriage ride around town, take part in the militia, have fun!

As for Norfolk - you can tour the Navy base - it's one of the largest in the world and to see those war ships in person make people (me included) awe-struck!

There are 2 parts of Jamestown... let's see if I can remember this correctly! There's the Jamestown restoration, where they have everything set up the way it was back in the day, and then there's the original Jamestown settlement site. I'm pretty sure you can visit both. If it's nice weather and you have some downtime, you can go to Jamestown Beach (on the banks of the James River). And drive on the Colonial Parkway instead of the regular highways.

If you like the colonial history, eat dinner at one of the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg where they serve colonial food and dress in period costume. Not sure if you need reservations. Also in CW, you can have high tea at the Williamsburg Inn, or go for a fancy dessert at the Trellis restaurant (famous for Death by Chocolate). A ghost tour is also a fun way to learn some things about the history of the area.

If you like museums in addition to the main sites there are a few others down there - nothing huge - but there is a Rockefeller folk art museum, a decorative arts museum, and John D Rockefellers house.

At night there are also entertainment historic shows - like concerts and re-enactments.

Bump for info on hotels.

We are going end of August. Does anyone have hotel recs? We were thinking of the Williamsburg Lodge (in CW), or the Kingsmill resort (near BG, but if anyone has any other recs that would be great!

Thanks!
