window AC units... what if the window is too wide?

Chat Icon

there MUST be a solution to this... some wierd kit or something. My mom needs to buy a window AC unit. The window it will go into is a whoppin' 44" in diameter, and most AC units fit into windows up to 36-40" A few more $$ models go upto 42"

Does anyone know if someone makes a kit to cover the remaining gap? someone MUST have thought of this....

TIA

There's usually two accordian like sides pieces attached to the AC that will bridge the gap for windows that are too wide.

You can use that route or cut a hole in the wall next to the window and stick the AC unit there.

yeah, that's what I'm talking about. the accordion sides that come with the units are too short by 2-8 inches.....

Cutting a hole in the wall is not an option in this case...

Did anyone ever purchase replacement sides that are slightly larger than the originals attached to the unit?

The windows in my parents house are too wide also. My da just screws the AC into the windowsill and tapes a piece of cardboard across the sides.

Not the most asthetically appealing solution, but it is effective.

My parents do something similar with a piece of plywood, they painted it to match the ac accordian color so it is not such an eye sore.

Re: window AC units... what if the window is too wide?

I have casement windows in my house, so I have the problem about the top half of the windows. I have to remove the entire window, put the AC in, then I cut a piece of Lexan to fit in the top half. Not perfect or pretty, but still lets light in, keeps wind, rain and most of the cold air in, so it's good enough for now...

We took wood and placed it from where the accordian ended from the A/C unit to the edge of the window frame. We tape dit all into place, so all cracks are covered from water/insects, etc. It's the best we could do.
