Winter and jogging
When the weather gets colder do you continue to jog outside or do you turn to a treadmill, gym, or just take it easy when it's bad out? Just trying to figure out what I'm going to do in the future.

Re: Winter and jogging
I always run outside unless its icy out. I'll run in the snow and the bitter cold, just not sleet/ freezing rainy stuff. I hate hate hate treadmills and gyms with a passion though.
On really bad days I just like to be lazy and sit in my house and drink cocoa.

I feel the same way. Can I ask what you wear when it's that cold out? I've only been jogging since the end of June so this winter will be my 1st. Are you suppose to bundle up and do you still sweat a lot being it's cold out?

Re: Winter and jogging
When its cold I usually wear leggings (the running kind, not the fashion wear kind) a turtleneck with a t shirt or long sleeved shirt over it, gloves and a hat or headband.
I get hot, to the point of sweating within the first 10 minutes of running. If I wear too much clothing, I get a heat rash.
I'm living in Pittsburgh now, and I did stay inside last winter when we had a stretch of days where the high temp was 2. Before windchill. It rarely gets that cold on LI though.

Thanks again. I thought maybe you had to wear a jacket. The above you mentioned sounds perfect for me.

Re: Winter and jogging
I run outside all year round but get the urge more during the winter to run outside why is that..
anyways generally in the winter I don - Running tights, high neck long sleeve wicking shirt (sometimes I get really hot and this takes the sweat from my body so Im not cold), fleece zip up, mittens (which I put in pockets sometimes) with hand warmers, toe warmers. hat with headband thingy. If its really freezing Ill add extra pair of tights and face mask (neoprene)
... nothing like a good run

Re: Winter and jogging
Great question b/c this will be my first winter, too. I plan on buying the leggings and long sleeve shirts for me and other stuff for DH.

Re: Winter and jogging
I love pulling out the winter gear. The rule of thumb is to dress as though it's 10 degrees warmer than it really is.
I wear winter pants when it goes below 30, tights capris anything under 45-50, and shorts anything over.
A tank when its 50+ degrees, short sleeves40-50, and a long sleeve wicking shirt (sometimes a short sleave under it) at 25-40, and the long sleeve and a running jacket when it's below 25 degrees.
I wear gloves, and a headband and running hat when it's 35 and under.

Re: Winter and jogging
I'll continue running outside until the temp drops below 40 degrees but will also be switching off with running on the treadmill.

That's the same thing I do.
I also jog with my head semi down in the winter as it is easier to breath. Last winter was my first, and sometimes i would put a little vicks vapor rub under my nose to help me breath easier. (I have asthma).

Re: Winter and jogging
the only thing that I don't do is take the kids with me if there is a lot of snow on the ground (sometimes one, but never the double stroller)
otherwise I run as normal...on really cold days:
lycra shorts with lines sports sweats over them, a T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt.
I'm all about layers and will go down to the T shirt.
a hat is a big plus - you lose a lot of heat through your head!

The material pulls the sweat away from your body, unlike cotton.
