Winter Crocs...

Rubber shoe craze: Winter Crocs with waterproof fur lining to go on sale
By LAURA ROBERTS

They inexplicably became the must-have shoe of the summer for celebrities and twenty million other fashion followers the world over.

Now with the nights closing in, makers of the rubber Croc sandal are set to cash in with a waterproof fur-lined version.

The fleece-lined shoe is set to storm past winter rival the Ugg-boot in popularity after flying off shelves in the UK in the three weeks they have been on sale.

What a croc: Since going on sale, the fur-lined shoes have been flying off shelves

Nicknamed the Ugly Betty of shoes, the new fleecy Crocs sell for £34.95 compared to designer Ugg boots which cost £90.

Billed as a "cosy" winter alternative ideal for apres ski the fake fur lining is removable if the temperature heats up unexpectedly.

The latest shoes are also available in a more muted range of autumnal colours including khaki, oatmeal, sky blue, chocolate and black.

Celebrity support from the likes of Kate Middleton, Jack Nicholson, Kate Moss and Teri Hatcher saw sales of the original Croc soar to 20 million worldwide in the last 12 months.

But the new and old versions of the sandal do have their detractors.

Daily Mail Fashion Editor Natalie Theo said: "What a load of croc.

"The invention of the Croc is tantamount to the awful invention of school knickers (or bullet proofs as we called them), and heavy duty bras.

"The sole purpose being one of function as opposed to fashion, frivolity and feeling good. Hideous. But somehow or other the Croc in all its rainbow rubbery coloured variations has become the new Ugg. A functional shoe turned into a fashion must-have by way of a celebrity or tow."

She continued: "This is the new must have ugly shoe, equally adored by civilian and celebrity wearers alike. Britney allegedly has these in every colour and who can forget those pics of Jack Nicholson in his Crocs.

"Only someone with the sex appeal of Jack Nicholson can pull off this shoe with aplomb. This is the Ugly Betty of shoes, and it seems that this winter this rubbery-fleecy lined version is bound to be a hit, combining all it's function and rubberiness with warmth."

Crocs were originally marketed as a boat shoe, with slip-resistant soles and holes in the top and sides to let water and sand out.

Despite general fashionista disapproval the sandals have become increasingly popular both as a casual trend and amongst hospital workers and caterers who appreciate their comfort and loose fit.

Winter Crocs have been available in the US for six weeks and retailers are already reporting rising sales.

A spokesman for Crocs said: "The initial response from consumers has been really positive. They seem delighted to have a winter version of the Crocs sandals. They are selling really well and we expect the same response."

The Crocs brand will open up its first UK flagship shop in London on 18 October.

It will also sell Croc clothing, sports equipment, bags and even underwear.

A further four outlet branches are planned across the UK.

As well as being available online Crocs are available in Littlewoods and Next Catalogues and at 800 stockists in the UK.

The rubber shoes weigh only six ounces and the original multicoloured shoes sold 20 million pairs last year generating £125 million of sales.

Worldwide there are 27,000 stores selling Crocs in 80 countries with 5 million pairs produced every month.

I know, but it sounds like there was a conscious effort to make these resemble Uggs, or at least to take away some of Uggs' market share.

I can't imagine ever being cold enough to need sheepskin lining.

Re: Winter Crocs...

Those are so ugly, sorry.
And I don't even see how they rival uggs -
Uggs are boots - these are slip on shoes - your heel and ankles are exposed. I would be freezing if I wore these with no socks.
