Winter weather advisory for Nassau, northwestern Suffolk
BY JOHN VALENTI | [email protected] 7:38 AM EST, January 6, 2009
Snow, sleet, freezing rain.
All are in the forecast, with a winter weather advisory in effect for Nassau, northwestern Suffolk and the five boroughs late Tuesday into Wednesday, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service in Upton.
The advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters said. A wintry mix is expected for the rest of Suffolk, with sleet and rain overnight.
The Island is expected to get all rain after 9 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters say.
Temperatures are expected to hover in the low-to-mid 30s until Thursday, when they dip into the low 20s.
Snow could begin after 3 p.m. Tuesday, with rain, snow and sleet expected before midnight.
The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. But, forecasters said, "little or no snow accumulation" is expected.
However, forecasters warn of freezing rain and so-called "black ice" -- a condition where ice patches remain near-invisible on road surfaces.
