Winthrop ?: Do Residents ever preform the C-sections or vaginal delivery?
My Mom has me stressing NOT to let a resident near me. She has me stressed out. (she works with a lot of them in this field & see's stuff)
Can someone please clarify this for me and give me some relief. I don't know what to do.
Thanks.

Winthrop is a teaching hospital, which means unless you specify, a resident can be in the room. I don't believe however, that they can perform a delivery without your doctor present. Talk to your doctor about it, he can ease your concerns I'm sure . Good luck!

I had a resident check me in triage. That was it! I think as long as yoru doctor is available or their covering doctor there should be no reason for them to do the delivery.

I had a resident check me in triage...then my doc was there the rest of the time.
The medical student came in while I was in labor and asked if it was OK to observemy delivery. My dr. said it was totally up to me, and I was fine with it. But, she just observed the delivery, didn't do anything else.

I also had a resident check me in triage, but my doctor was the one who I dealt with once admitted. I did have 2 students/residents ask me if they can observe the birth and I signed a waiver allowing it, but all they did was watch!

I had a scheduled c-section. A resident was present and assisted my dr. during the surgery but my dr was doing the surgery.
She checked on me/my incision everyday and she removed my staples.

Re: Winthrop ?: Do Residents ever preform the C-sections or vaginal delivery?
I had a residenty deliver me vaginally this time with my OB right next to him. Let me tell you, he was so nice and so good. He was really patient with me and caring and calming while I was screaming. I had them husstling because I went from 8-10 cm in 10 min and HAD to push so they moving pretty fast and he was calm through the whole thing. He also came to check up on me each morning I was their and wanted to see how I was feeling. I had a bad experience with a resident when I had to bring my DS to the hopsital (not winthrop) and if my OB wasn't their I would have never had known he was a resident. When it was time to stich my episomity he did it and she was guiding him and he listened to her and didn't seem arrogant at all. He also did great delivering the afterbirth, I didn't need to push. He was massaging my stomach from the outside and just told me to relax. I even told him what a great job he did.

Wow, ok I feel better. This being my first time I have no idea what to expect, but at least now i know what usually happens.
I don't think I want my mom there she will just stress me out. She will be restricted to the waiting room.

Re: Winthrop ?: Do Residents ever preform the C-sections or vaginal delivery?
There was a resident with my doctor for my surgery and he was AMAZING. He also came to check on me every day. I felt that he was completely competent and that I was in good hands with him also.
The worst part about it was that he was kind of cute. It didn't really hit me until after a day or so and then I realized that he not only saw me BUTT naked - but my insides also.

Re: Winthrop ?: Do Residents ever preform the C-sections or vaginal delivery?
I had a resident delivery Roman along with an Ob from the practice. She was HORRIBLE! While stitching me up after my episiotomy she actually told the Dr. "I'm not good at this," when the Dr. was questioning her technique. Great, just want I wanted to hear. DH and I just looked at each other. Then, she came to my room the next day to check on me and I was telling her I had shooting pains in my neck and spine. She said, "oh that's just from pushing you'll be fine in a couple of days." I had a major spinal headache and ended up going to the Emergency room after being discharged. What a dumbazz she was!

Re: Winthrop ?: Do Residents ever preform the C-sections or vaginal delivery?
Residents do not often take the place of regular doctors, they are there in addition. I do not think there is any more of a chance of having a bad resident than there is of having a bad doctor. They aren't just kids who are experimenting!!! I had surgery in a teaching hospital. The residents helped me tremendously by being there for me more than any doctor had to be. When I had an argument with a nurse, a resident stepped in and corrected the situation (I think he just contacted my Dr but that is what the nurse should have done). Some people do not like being checked so much b/c they want to rest, but you are allowed to say no to the residents.

residents don't make any decisions without their attendings (the Dr's) concent.
They usually take care of minor tasks.

I would think that if your doc didn't make the delivery, you might have a resident....at any hospital

LMAO...I had the SAME resident and thought the SAME thing. He really saw me at my worst!
Spread open on the OR table, guts hanging out, ASSS in full view .....and then in bed looking like a train wreck...
He was adorable. And sooo nice.
ETA- but my Dr was in the Room too ( both of them actually) AND the resident did my stiches on my C-section and as sick as it is, I have gotten compliments from all the nurses when I was in the hospital on how amazing my scar looked.
