Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
My twin boys have taken the binky since they were born, today I threw them ALL out in the garbage. They are 25 months old and one of my boys is biting the nipple on it and breaking them.
I am so nervous to see how nap and bedtime go today but I figure better now than later.
wish me luck.

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
Good luck! It was tough on DS when we did it at 20 months and had to endure a whole new round of sleep training. BUT now that it's in the past, it's the best thing we ever did!!!!!!

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
I did it a month ago when DD was 20 months old.
The first night she cried for 45 minutes, after that each day got a little better.
She still cries sometimes when we put her down, usually for a nap, but it's over in about 10 mins.
Good luck!

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
Good luck! I was thinking about getting rid of my twins' binkys in the next few weeks and they're only 13 months! I've started taking them away during the day and in the next week or two i'll start taking them away at nap time! Im way to scared to go cold turkey!

Good luck, I'm thinking of doing it in the next couple months. My DS is 18 months, adjusted to 16 months & is addicted. I have to tackle the bottles for milk.

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
I tried cold turkey at 18 months and my son who was the best sleeper would cry hysterical and refused to sleep and I just couldn't do it. So I cut off the tip of the binky and gave it to him like that for a few weeks. Then cut off more, and more, etc. Until there was barely anything left and he was just taking it in his hand and not even putting in his mouth. Then he gradually didn't ask for it anymore and then he just stopped. When it is cut it loses the oral sensation and so its like he gave it up instead of me taking it away from him. Best thing ever and it worked for me to do it gradually. Good Luck!
ETA: He only used binky for naps/nighttime. I think it's harder if binky is used during day/playtime/etc. In that case, I know poking holes in pacifier also works as well and might not be as dramatic for your child.

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
gl. I did it at 20 months when my Ds had a cold. he couldn't properly suck on it and wasn't using it much bc of that so I seized the opportunity. it was like nothing. we were very lucky with that one.

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
It wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be. My DS Chase cried for maybe 15 minutes and my other DS Preston only cried for about 7 minutes before bed. Then Chase woke up at 5am looking for it but I put music on in there room and he went back to sleep.
Today nap time was rough bc usually they get there binky and blanket and pass right out today they played in there cribs for over an HOUR. I kept going in and saying shhh nap time. FINALLY they fell asleep.
I am hoping by Thursday they will forget about it all together.

Re: Wish me luck, getting rid of binkys
My daughter was 3 when we got rid of it, she only used it at home, it wasn't effecting her speech, she has a great vocabulary and speaks better than a lot of the other kids in daycare, so I let her keep it. One day she left it in my mother's car, and that was it, no more binky. I thought it was going to be hard, but she took it really well. I just hated taking away something that soothed her, she's not going to go to college with it, and it makes her happy, I wouldn't take away a lovey, and that's what the binky was. My son gave his up at 6 months when he got coxsakie, but it's the same thing, I'd rather them be happy, and feel secure than worry about what other people are thinking because they are 2 and still have a binky.
