Wow, very interesting. We've tossed around the pool idea too. I tell my DH that we can get one only when we can afford a pool boy to take care of it!!

I heard that in certain areas down south it does decrease the value of your home.
IMO, I think around here it doesn't have any effect... unless it's some exotic setup with a waterfall and rocks, etc.

Usually homes pools make a home less desirable - but I wanted a pool very badly so for me it was a HUGE plus!

Dh wants a house with a pool. I agree houses with built in pools look so nice, BUT I see what my parents go through with theirs. It is an expense and it is time consuming. Plus if we have kids I am nervous with that too.

I agree, because of the liability.

I have a pool and I have no regrets at all. It can be very expensive though.

Re: With all this talk about pools...interesting article.
it depends on wants/desires of the buyer. i don't think any buyer would turn down a house they love in a desireable area simply because it has a pool.

now DH changed his mind.

Re: With all this talk about pools...interesting article.
thats interesting about how many pools are in the neighborhood - almost everyone of my neighbors have a pool - so I guess that's good for us
I will say btwn chemicals, electricity and water - it is a lot to maintain - but worth it especially on a day like today!!
But we have to get a new winter cover and probably need a new liner soon :( not looking forward to that

growing up we had a pool, my father couldn't get wait to get rid of the house and the pool.
It was fun, but so much work and $.

I would love a pool but I would hate to maintain it.

We grew up with a pool and my Dad still LOVES the maintenance. We are currently searching for a new house and it just happens that 2 of our picks have pools w/a sauna. I think it's a plus!

Actually, we did. The pool took up almost the whole backyard and my son would have no where to play, so we turned it down. It's a shame because we loved the house and the area, but we need a yard.

In-ground pools under the law are called "attractive nuisances". While they look nice, they must be fenced properly. That means, not only a fence around your property, but, also, around the pool, and that one needs to have a self-locking gate. This may not be required in all towns, but, if someone should drown in your pool and you did not take every precaution possible, you could, possibly, wind up with a monumental lawsuit. Also, your homeowners policy should be increased, just in case. Pools are nice, but can be quite expensive.
