With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
Do you REALLY see a difference on your bill?
Can you use them in lamps? I know, stupid, but do lamp shades fit on them?
Do they start off dim and get brighter after 10 minutes?

Yes.
Not sure I see a measurable difference in my electric bill, but they last a heck of a lot longer.
Regular lamp shades fit them fine.
Mine are always the same light level.

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
The former owners of our house had those bulbs- the ones that look like a coil. They left a couple in the study and the laundry room. We've been in the house 2 years, use those lights a lot, and haven't changed them yet. We are going to switch to them- if we don't save on our bill that's ok, I think it's worth it to not have to change the bulbs so often, especially when the fixture's in the ceiling and has to be unscrewed.
I don't know how they work in lamps where the shade goes on the bulb.

We changed all our lamps to the energy savers. I think they are a LOT dimmer.
they do seem dimmer and also take a few seconds to reach their brightness. They do last long!!

We've been using them since they first showed up at Costco but only use them in certain fixtures ... well, actually everything except our ceiling fans because I don't like the way they look and as much as I am trying to be a "good earth citizen" I can't get there yet!!

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
We have them all over our apartment. They fit fine in lamps. They look wierd in our ceiling fan but we put them anyway. The bulb in our hallway is noticably dim when we first turn it on and then it brightens up. I think they are all like that but for some reason it's really noticeable in that spot. We've noticed a slight decrease in our energy bill. It's not a lot but over time it will definitely outweigh the cost of the bulbs. Plus if you buy the bulbs at Lowes or somewhere that you can get the bulk packages, they are much cheaper than buying one bulb at a time.

We have them almost everywhere in our house. DH thinks they make a difference in our bills and they last a long, long time. They do start of dim and get brighter.

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
We bought the ones at Home Depot just last week. We bought 3 of them for our bathroom. We bought the "daylight" ones - they're the brightest because we needed the extra light in there. I LOVE the way it looks. No clue yet about electric bill though.

we have them everywhere, even in our kitchen high hats. Only my dining room chandlier & one ceiling fan have regular bulbs because they are sizes the energy savers don't come in yet. I think it makes a big difference. They last forever.

My entire house uses them. I'm honestly not sure about the difference in electric bill (we've used them since we've lived here). But I can say that they last a lot longer!

I was just about to write this. It's in the LI Stop & Shops...my dad told me about the sale. I went to the one up near my house in Monroe and they were out. I got myself a raincheck.

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
Does anyone else find that that make a buzzing noise? We just bought one last night & put it in one of the bathrooms. I didn't like it at all. It gave off a yellowish glow & a buzzing noise. I didn't think it would work in the room where I put my make-up on.
We were going to move it to another room to see if it wa the light fixture that made it yellow & buzzy, but DH dropped it & it broke.
ETA-to answer FireIslandLove, I got it inTarget, I think it was $4 something.

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
We've been replacing incandescent bulbs with these as the regular bulbs burn out. We have them in the sconces around the front door outside, and a few inside. Especially in areas that are hard to get to. They last a long time, so I don't have to change them as often. The older ones take a while to warm up, but the new ones seem to come on right away.
We get ours from Home Depot usually.

Re: With respect to Earth Day, anyone have those energy saving light bulbs?
We have them throughout the house. They don't all need to have the coiled standard Compact Fluorescent look. They also have high hat ones (the high hat is around the coils) and ones for fans. I got ours at Home Depot/Lowes.
THe lamp life of most compact fluorescents (screw ins) ranges from 8000 to 12000 hours(generally), whereas Incandescents have a paltry lifespan of 750-2000 hours (I work for a ltg company)
