Woman settles case over flour-filled condoms
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters Life!) - A U.S. college student imprisoned for three weeks for trying to take flour-filled condoms onto an airplane has settled her lawsuit against Philadelphia for $180,000, a city spokesman said on Friday.
Janet Lee, 21, a student at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, was arrested at Philadelphia International Airport in 2003 after police and security officials thought the flour was an illegal drug.
She was held in Philadelphia on drug-trafficking charges and released only when tests proved the substance in the three condoms was flour.
The condoms, which are sometimes used to smuggle drugs, were a joke among the students, and Lee was taking them home to Los Angeles.
Her civil rights case against Philadelphia, which had been set to go to trial on Thursday, was settled for $180,000, said Ted Qualli, spokesman for Philadelphia Mayor John Street.

If it didn't take 3 weeks to get a test back on whether or not they were filled with drugs or flour, I'd say it's a bs suit. The fact that she was held for so long was completely unreasonable. If they held her for a day or two, I'd say they were justified.
Thoughts? (besides the obvious, don't fill condom with flour suggestions)

I would love to know what the joke was. Knowing that people swallow drug-filled condoms, it was a pretty stupid move on her part. But to be held for three weeks??? People can commit murder and get released on bail in a few hours!!!

I'm thinking - just buy a stress ball it won't be so slippery.
eta. also if she needed stress balls then, think how stressed she was for 3 weeks without her flour-filled condoms.

When I went to school, the RA's would create stress-free programs and one of the programs would allow the student's to make "stress balls" but you could choose how to make them - balloons, condoms, etc. They were used during finals week when you wanted to break your professor's neck, you could shake the living daylights out of the "stress ball" instead.

In today's climate regarding airline travel, did she think she was not going to be arrested? You would have to be a complete moron not to think that. The outrageous part of this whole thing IMO is that she got money out of it. I don't care if she was held for 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 years. It was a deliberate act on her part that she thought would be funny. She got what she deserved.
