Re: wood floor in the basement
I wanted to do them, but once we ripped the carpet up I knew we couldn't. The floors were too uneven and would have required a lot of prep work in order to have the floors laid.
Hopefully, your basement is not as ghetto as mine is.

Re: wood floor in the basement
It's really not a good idea to do actual wood due to moisture issues.
One of the things that I love about my house is that it has oak flooring in every room on both levels... being the daughter of a master carpenter I'm ridiculous about REAL wood, however, given all of the issues a basement presents I did realize the best solution would be laminate.
My DH (*****not handy at all... not handy at all... barely can hang a picture but I love him*****) installed the laminate with the help of my MIL (I was soooooo pg with twins at the time ) as his first REAL home improvement project... he says it himself, "if he can do it, anyone can do it"

i would do laminate for a basement, just too risky with moisture issues.

Re: wood floor in the basement
I have hardwood in my "basement" - it's actually a split level so my basement is only about four feet or so underground, but still below ground level. Haven't had any problems at all but you need a certain subfloor for it (not sure what kind - it was here when I bought the house many years ago).

Re: wood floor in the basement
ITA about real hardwood and moisture...but since laminate is engineered you could use that.
We just installed laminate in our entire basement. I was kind of iffy about even doing that and having it all ruined, but we sealed the floor, then put down plastic sheeting, then foam padding with moisture barrier. Might be over kill but for the few extra dollars we felt better doing this than having a leak and having to replace the entire floor and do all that work again!
Good Luck
