Re: wood paneling
we have wood paneling in our craft room. I wanted to keep the "crafty" look of the paneling so we primed and painted it and it looks really good.

Re: wood paneling
There is a dark real wood paneling in our laundry room. We plan on priming & painting it - we love the texture it gives the walls for in that room.
The primer we're using is Zinsser 123.
We also have a light pressed board panelling over two walls in the "baby's room", but we'll be taking that down and no doubt re-sheetrocking it at that time.

Re: wood paneling
I have real wood paneling in my DR that made the room so dark and gloomy. I painted over it about a year or so ago. Not sure what primer we used but we def had to give it a couple of coats.

Re: wood paneling
We primed and painted ours also. I don't recall the type of primer that we used (although it was especially for wood paneling with poly on it). We bought it at Aboff's though.
After that, we painted the paneling and LOVE the way it looks.

Re: wood paneling
We used joint compound and filled in the gaps; including tape on the joints where the panels met.
Sanded it down, used benjamin moore 'clean start' primer and then color.
You can't even tell its paneling.
Much easier and less expensive than taking it down and re-sheetrocking.

My parents painted over the wood paneling in their basement - it looks beautiful!

Re: wood paneling
There was wood paneling in our living room but we are in the process of re-doing the room. When we moved in it was painted a nice light beige, but I still hated it. Sorry, just my opinion.

Re: wood paneling
You can paint over it. Use a good primer to help the paint stick.
We just tore down the paneling in the lower level of our house. I am so happy its gone. We are re-sheetrocking and painting.

Our painter said you need to use an oil based primer so that it really adheres to the paneling.
