work anecdote. Man this board is quiet!
Had to share. Baby shower at my job yesterday. I always try to stay as far away from the mom-to-be at these things because inevitably the conversation turns to something gross and of course that's exactly what happened.
I was about to leave for the day so I wanted to say goodbye since her maternity leave starts. So I approach and she and an older co worker are discussing breast feeding, latching on, milk squirting all over in the shower (this is me almost breching all over the cake---> ). Neither of these women knows me all that well, and as i'm standing there turning shades of green, they ask me if I breastfed. I said laughin, "uhhhh no, I have no kids. I have 65 and 74 year old children at home". They laughed but were genuinely surprised I had no kids.
And the thought of me breastfeeding just makes my skin crawl and this icon just is not adequate

In my prior job I would stay far away from these work situations as well, but for a different reason. Being around preg women made me feel sad and a bit jealous of the mom to be. I hate when people ask me if I have kids. As far as discussing BF, I have to discuss that at work since I work with preg ladies all day.... This new work situation makes me feel sad at a completely different level but I cant avoid them as I would normally do. This is now I now pay my bills.
I still know how you feel.

It's kinda funny being on the CF side of life
People automatically assume I have children. I'm 38, married a little over 4 years ... I HAVE to have kids by now-no? For me, I couldn't and I'm trying to embrace the CF lifestyle. But I find it funny walking into conversations such as that with people who don't really know me. They always assume I have kids.
Is that what happens at some point in life? People just assume everyone is doing what they are doing in life based on age?
Funny and interesting
I recently went to a christening. An older aunt of the babies dad asked me how my children are doing. I think she was trying to read me because she knew we met but wasn't sure who I was. So I said oh no, I don't have any kids. Well, she went on and on You don't have kids? Really? I could have sworn you had kids? No lady - no kids here.
And my favorite - my defensive driving lady. Had to call her for points on my license and she asked me if we had kids yet. Nope. No kids. Oh come on. You have to have kids. Why don't you have kids yet ? You guys would make such cute babies. Joe has to have a mini me (Ok thanks for making me want to crawl into a hole)

People are idiots and need to mind their own business. Sorry but I have kids and I would NEVER ask anyone these questions nor did I like when people asked me when I got married.

I dont know if its because I dont have kids that I dont ask, but I never ask people either if they have kids. In most conversations its easy to find out without asking, most people with kids reference family at some point.
being asked if I have kids always rubs me in a sore spot. Inside, it always makes me feel less than (this is just me) like somehow i failed or people like to say, your better off, kids give you wrinkles.

Ugh. people are terrible. I was asked by a complete stranger at a Christening this (the Christening?, the baby?), "gave (us) any ideas.". I just said no & got up & left the table & hyperventilated in the bathroom.
It is bad enough being at baby centered things with my MIL-- She doesn't say it but I know she resents me forr being the reason she isn't a grandmother, but to have a stranger bring it up. . . .
I swore of Christenings since then, but gave in & am going to one this weekend & am really anxious about it. It's not a sit-down event & I will have friends there, so it should be better.

Re: work anecdote. Man this board is quiet!
FUNNY!!
before my furry kids passed I would say, I have four legged kids. BOY would eyes roll...
Once a fellow co-worker asked my first week on the job if I had kids. I said I have four legged kids a dog and rabbit. To her that meant nothing and she never asked about them, even when she knew my little girl had cancer. In fact, several co-workers told me to put her down and why spend the $$.
Meanwhile I had to hear about her sons issues with school.
I'm going to try your answer next time, do you say it loud with a tone?? do you roll your eyes? lol

Re: work anecdote. Man this board is quiet!
Crashing here. I know, some welcome it some don't but I think maybe you 'll find my perspective interesting. Sometimes I think that some moms feel the need to initiate or haze the mom to be. As soon as they are around a pregnant woman they tell the most disgusting stories about things that happen when you have a baby. I don't really get it. Then these things don't really happen every day and some people do not experience them at all. Now sometimes when people start those stories I take a look at the mom to be and I try to decide whether she needs someone to save her.
