Work holiday parties
The holiday party for my division is anemic at best, and each year there is talk of stopping them altogether. When I started here, it was paid for by the company and spouses were invited. But no more!
All the other local divisions participate in their own holiday party where everyone pays their own way and spouses are not invited.
I just got an email about it and the manager of our division said that he hopes to see the people from our division there, because it will be a good time.
I guess that means that we will not be having our own party.

Re: Work holiday parties
We never have a holiday party. Last year staff members were asked to pay and ultimately, the party was cancelled.

Last year my company "rented" out Dave and Buster's. Wasn't too bad, spouses were invited and you could kind of do your own thing. Food wasn't great though

Re: Work holiday parties
My department hosts a huge one for all the company employees, their spouses and industry people. It's a nice thing, but it is a LOT of work for my office manager and I. There are also a couple of smaller holiday lunches we are expected to attend.

Re: Work holiday parties
before my time, my company used to have huge black tie dinners for the holidays
now its down to stand up cocktail parties with no spouses on a low bidget of $30 per person (but drinks paid for in addition)
this year i convinced my boss to have our department take over the planning and have a really nice party at a really great restaurant- we will have a bar of chilled seafood and passed o'rdeurves .
for once im really looking forward to it

I don't think I'd love a party where people got sick.

Well...that was just the once. The other years the parties were AWESOME. Thankfully I didn't get sick
I LOVE that it's a CB this year...MUCH better place!
Spouses are always invited. TONS of food, free drinks, dancing...

Re: Work holiday parties
We have three...I work for a large hotel company and although I am a "corporate" employee, I sit at a regional office in a hotel in NYC.
1. Hotel party - HUGE party with all hotel associates invited w/spouse - over 1,000 ppl. It usually sucks but its fun to see teh housekeepers get all dolled up in evening wear. 2. Hotel's Manager's Party - no spouses. Much smaller and fun - they raffle off trips - last year I won a trip to AZ. 3. Corporate Party which is usually held in NYC is in Stamford this year and I am not going. This party is usually super nice. Last year Preston Bailey did the flowers.

Re: Work holiday parties
I work in a small business & we are all like family. Instead of a party, we do a luncheon right before we break for the Christmas Holiday. Our boss lets us pick what we want to cater in (usually Zorn's) & we have that for lunch, get our annual bonus & leave for the holiday!
We all like it this way better. Not structured & we can truly relax!

Re: Work holiday parties
My old company (Hispanic Network), we had a crazy party at Eugene's. No spouses. Tons of Latin music and dancing and drinking. It was always a good time.
I'm new here, but I think they have a company party and a department party. We shall see . . .

Re: Work holiday parties
Our holiday parties are pretty sad.
It started as sandwiches in the boardroom. After standing around eating the owners gave the go ahead to use the show room -- the place with all the tables.
They tried going off premisis a couple of times and it was a disaster so we brought it back to the office with a different menu.
I wish they would just drop the whole facade and close the office early that day.

This is what I would prefer over a night party. I don't really care about a work party and there is no way I would want to pay my own way for one!
We don't really have a party - our department is small and the last few years a few of us have gone out to lunch and that was fine with me.
