Work peeve:When other people try to do your job

Don't you hate it?

I am in a very specialized industry, everyone has a specific role. As Stage Manager I take the show over once it goes inot tech and completely run all technical rehearsals and shows (tech rehearsals are rehearsals in the theate with sound, lights, costumes, props, etc).

One of the directors is pissing me off. She took it upin herself to take my spike tape and completely incorrectly spike things. I mean she put a huge red X on the stage. The whole point of spiking is that it has to be discreet.

Then I was making my way down from the booth to stop her from orchestrating a scene transition that was going to be dangerous and messy, and then an ACTOR turns to my ASM (my assistant basically) who was trying to correct the situation and says to him "let's just listen to Jane" (the director). I was about to scream.

This is the same woman who insisted her actors have a full run through and not a cue to cue like everyone else, then, the 3rd show didn't even get through theit cue to cue evben though they stayed until midnight, and Ms. Director went home at 10.

Not to mention that I have to respike everything which she did so stuypidly and wasted about half a roll of my (expensive) spike tape.

I think that's my biggest work pet peeve..is other people trying to do my job...

Does anyone else experience this?

Yes. I work in production for a large company that owns a local niche magazine. One of my sales reps thinks she is a graphic designer or a production manager, depending on the day. She is constantly giving mis-information to the clients and will intentionally disallow the clients from speaking to me so that she will "get her way." It just took me 3 weeks to put together a book that should have taken 5 days.



And most of the time, they are not even good at their own job...so STOP GETTING ALL UP IN OURS!

I have the opposite problem. Other people expect me to do their jobs for them for various reasons!

Jennifer, your post took me back to my younger years. I've had a couple of jobs as a lighting tech & props mistress for traveling theatre companies. What fun that was, I loved it.

But I do remember the techies were always at odds with the "talent".
