work yearly review... it seems i'm not who i thought i was
i just got home from work. at the end of my shift, i had a meeting for our yearly review.
it seems that i'm a horrible employee.
i work in customer service, and it seems that i'm a courteous and helpful with patients even when it's a challenging call. i have wonderful attention to detail when it comes to the data processing i do.
but it also seems that i am a horrible person to work with. i was told that i am a negative person who makes new employees feel uncomfortable and isolated. so my review was nothing but negative and if i don't change who i am, i'll be terminated.
oh, and i'm not getting a raise this year.
i don't get it.
i'm not perfect, and i know that. but i just didn't realize that people feel that i'm such a horrible person.
i have NEVER had anything negative written about me at ANY job i've ever had.
i don't want to sound paranoid, or be the type of person who blames others for her own shortcomings. but this has really thrown me for a loop.
just had to get this off my chest. thanks for reading.

Don't sign the review before you get some further explanation. You can't defend yourself without all of the details

I agree. Is there a place on the review for your comments?

what type of environment do you work in? Do you get along with everyone? From the past I try not to get too attached to any gossipee things at work for these kinds of reasons. I always keep in mind that this is my job, this is how i bring in my income, it is a plus if I make friends but in the end if I play it low everything works out just fine. Sometimes you get screwed if you tell too much.

I personally wouldnt write anything....this is how they feel. By you writing more it only seems argumentative. You shouldnt have to defend yourself. If you are comfortable then stay and lay low otherwise I would look for something else.

I have a question. Have they ever mentioned this to you at all before, in a non-salary review situation, and give you a chance to improve this so-called negative behavior?
It's only fair for this to be brought to your attention prior to your income being affected because of it.
I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I wouldn't stand for it, personally. If it was important enough to affect my wages, it was important enough to bring it up BEFORE my yearly review.
Just how I feel, and good luck with whatever you decide - to fight, or to find another position elsewhere.

Re: work yearly review... it seems i'm not who i thought i was
I'd like to add (because I assumed this, and I shouldn't have) that I would take a cold, hard look at whether what they're saying has a shred of truth. And if I did, I would work on that regardless of the outcome.
I didn't want you to think I was just pointing at them as the bad guy. It's really hard to take personal criticisms like that, I know.
But they should have come to you in a more constructive manner before now.

you're right. it has been a moment to look at myself.
don't get me wrong, i don't think i'm perfect.
there was something that was mentioned earlier. i posted about it a while ago. a new girl mis-understood a conversation i was having with someone. she thought it was about her. she went crying to my boss. we had a meeting about it.. so forth and so on.. it was quickly resolved because it was a mis-understanding. i thought it died there. especially, when that girl quit soon after.
in the end... regardless of income... this has been a learning experience. not everyone is who/what they seem. cause i could have sworn that i got along great with everyone in my department. back in april, i hosted a baby shower for a co-worker in my home and i invited EVERYONE in our department. the only person not invited was our supervisor because i knew that the mother-to-be would want it that way.
oh well.
thank you all for your positive words.
as dh told me, it's time to read the writing on the wall and seriously look for a new job.

Awwww, I'm so sorry that the outcome of your review was a negative one....I would definitely talk to the person who shared this with you and get some further explanation and that way atleast you can defend yourself. Hang in there.....I'm sure another job would be worthy of having you....every thing happens for a reason, remember that!!

Re: work yearly review... it seems i'm not who i thought i was
Libby, First of all - you know that I think you are terrific.
Having said that, you need to stand up for yourself to just a small degree.
You need to draft a well thought out and clearly written response. Indicate that your attitude 'problem' has not been brought to your attention before and that you are utterly shocked at the completely negative review that you were given. Indicate that you have still not been given any specific examples or instances that you can take away and learn from - which makes it far more difficult to improve. Indicate that you had a shower for your colleague and that this action alone would seem to go against the very nature of their complaint. Say that you would like to be able to improve whatever challenges that they percieve you as having - but that a broad "Your difficult to work with" is not a constructive comment that you can work with. I would further point out that with regard to your JOB RESPONSIBILITIES and JOB DUTIES you do a stellar job and that you feel that it is unfair of them to withhold a normal salary increase based on a personality issue. Give it to the person who did your review and let him know that his boss, the HR department and your direct supervisor are all going to be cc'd.
Based solely on what you wrote here, it seems that your supervisor is at fault. The review does not seem constructive at all. And it seems like they are pretty much looking for an excuse to not pay you more money. I wouldn't want to work there for THOSE reasons. So I would draft a response AND look for another job.

All I can say is WOW.
How could they not warn you if they felt that this would effect your livelyhood? It doesn't seem very fair. I would definitely draft a letter and make sure it is placed in your file, pointing out that this has never been addressed with you and had it been, you would have been more than willing to work on it.

WOW! I am SHOCKED. I have met you. In PERSON. We hugged, you were funny & sweet. I don't work with you, so I don't know how you are at work, but I have a hard time believing you suddenly turn into an ogre!
Maybe you keep to yourself. Maybe you don’t stand around and chat. Your boss should be happy for that. I would do as you plan – look for a new position. When you get one, write them a letter and tell them how unfair you feel they’ve been. Maybe they need a review of what kind of boss they are!!

Re: work yearly review... it seems i'm not who i thought i was
I have always overseen the review process for all of the companies I worked for and I have to say that my biggest pet-peeve is managers who hide behind the review process. This is not the time to all of a sudden mention problems...your manager should have had a talk with you when he/she was made aware of this behavior and informed you then that it needed to change. To bring it up now and penalize you by denying an increase annoys me to no end and I don't think that it's fair.
I would suggest that you go to your manager and sit down with him/her to discuss this "behavior" and ways to improve the situation. You can both come up with goals and expectations for your position so that you have a clear understanding of what is expected and what you can do to move forward. (In the meanwhile see what else is out there for you.)
Good Luck!
