Working moms: Commuting
How long does it take you to get to work 1 way on a normal basis?
I am debating between looking for a new job or not for next year. I am 47 miles away. Granted it is a straight 47 miles no traffic (usually 45 min commute).
I hate being so far away from DD and DS especially once they get a little older and are in school.
Would you look for a new job to be closer to home or stick it out where you are?

Re: Working moms: Commuting
I travel about 13 miles each way to work, personally, for me, 47 miles is way too far away. I think you should look for something closer to home IMO. What about if there is traffic? My 13 miles can take me an hour if the traffic is bad, I would hate to imagine 47 miles!!!

Re: Working moms: Commuting
I'm actually doing the opposite. I stayed in the city to maintain my 15 minute (2 mile) commute but will be moving out to LI probably next summer significantly lengthening it.

Mine is the same.
We are looking to move to LI later this year. I might end up changing jobs or not working at all if we move too far out. I can't do long commutes. I can't be away from DD that long.

Re: Working moms: Commuting
I travel about 45- 1 hour. Im not gonnna lie, it kinda stinks. I can make it home in half hour if there is no traffic but since Im on the LIE during ruch hour that really never is the case. I live in rocky point and my job is in hauppauge and realistically hauppauge is the closest corporate area so there really isnt too miuch of a job market anywhere else for me. Im in corporate marketing.

it takes me about 10 minutes each way.
With your commute, I would be most worried about the bad weather and what that will do to it. Also, when you move are you going to be closer?

15 minutes. I love it.
I lived the same distance away from work when I was on LI and it took me nearly an hour.

20 minutes. I can't complain.

Re: Working moms: Commuting
It's about 45 minutes and as much as I'd like to be closer to home, it's just not possible. I have tenure so I am not going anywhere.

Re: Working moms: Commuting
1:15 each way. I just went back to work so we'll see how it goes. I don't really want to get a new job but it would be great being closer to home. ETA - I take the LIRR and subway.

DH and I are both 15 minutes away from our jobs. We considered the commute before we purchased our home.

Re: Working moms: Commuting
I was traveling about the same distance as you are now. I was pulled out of work because of the commute (I'm 36 weeks pregers). For me it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes with no traffic but, with trafic I would take about 1 hour 45 minutes and in bad weather 2 hours each way.
For that reason, I am absolutely going to look closer to home. I think 1/2 hour is reasonable. It was crazy trying to get back to LI by 6:00 to pick up DS from daycare. I always had to leave work early (we moved back to LI in June).
I say you should look and see what's out there. If you are OK with the commute then don't just settle on a job just because it's closer.

Re: Working moms: Commuting
I live in Queens and work in Midtown. going to work...20 minutes, coming home...30 door to door. But, I drive to the train station so I don't have to wait for the bus. When I used to do bus/train it was 75 minutes.
