Working Moms...Need advice please!
I'm currently on maternity leave and am scheduled to go back to work at the end of Sept. When I went on leave, I had every intention of going back to work full time since our DS will be in a daycare owned by a family member. Fast forward 10 wks later and DH and I both agree that, at only 3 mos old, DS will be too young to be in daycare on a full time basis, regardless of who he will be with when we're at work. We both feel it's really important that one of us be with him as much as possible when he is so young.
My question is, how should I word this when I talk to my boss about coming back to work on a reduced hour schedule? I'm having breakfast with her tomorrow and plan on talking with her about it then. I would like to work 6 hours per day, 5 days per week and am hoping they agree.
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Well it depends. What do you do and what were your hours? I am a financial analyst and took a pay cut to work 3 days a week, and sometimes from home.

I'm a manager at a staffing company. I would be willing to take a pay cut in order to work reduced hours. Prior to having DS, I usually worked a 60 hr week by choice, not by requirement.

I think you already said what you need to say. You have hours in mind and just need to be upfront. Don't apologize, but be willing to negotiate. You work hard, are worth proly more than what they pay you, and have needs. Just be honest and tell them what you are willing to do (emphasize the positive, not what you aren't willing to do) since your circumstance/mind has changed about putting DC in daycare.

That's really good advice. I think I'm just nervous about what I'll have to end up doing if they cannot be flexible. Thank you again!

I agree with this but would also add that should come up with different scenarios in the event that it's not going to work out. Would you be willing to sign on at home? be available on your off-hours?
My admin returned from maternity leave this month. Her older daughter has medical issues & needs to be brought to specialist twice a week. She started out requesting a 4 or 3 day reduced work schedule (her hours are already 8-4pm). She wasn't sure if she would be able to afford to cut down to 3 days.
After discussing it with her family, she had no option to work 3 days but was requesting a small raise. There is no way a raise was going to be approved. Finally I suggested she work a 4 day work week but one of those days would be from home. That means she can bring her daughter to the doctor on her work from home day & as long as she's available & is willing to make up the hours during the week (at night or whenever she can), it's a win-win situation for everyone.
She walked out of my office looking like she won the lottery. I have a happy employee who feels that her company cares about her and one that will be working hard to make sure that we know she's not taking advantage.
eta. Good luck with everything!

Re: Working Moms...Need advice please!
This is what I did.
Before I went out on maternity leave, I approached my boss and asked if it would be possible to work from home 3 days a week. At the time they gave me 2 days a week at home. No pay cuts or anything.
Fast forward to today. I work from home 4 days a week. This time my company moved buildings and were unable to find us space so I worked from home for a few months - My DH and I got used to the schedule and decided that if I couldn't keep it(especially after DD #2 was born), I would quit. I again went to my boss and said, I am willing to take on additional work, but I want to work from home. What I got was 4 days at home, more work, and a decent pay increase.
I know mine is a different situation, but I hope it helps you a little.
You just have to figure out what you want, be prepared for a no, or be willing to walk away.
