Working mothers -- breast pump questions
What type of breast pump do you/did you use? I have seen recommendations for renting a hospital grade pump, but I'm concerned that wouldn't be portable enough to take to work. I am returning to work after 12 weeks and plan on pumping for at least 6 months (hopefully a year), so I thought it made sense to invest in a Pump in Style, instead of renting a hospital grade pump. What did you do?

Re: Working mothers -- breast pump questions
It would definitely depend on your supply (which you can't predict). You can rent a hospital one for the first 2 months of maternity leave and then try the PIS the third month to see how you do.
I think alot of people are hesitant, b/c you cannot return breast pump items easily, so if you rent first, you can see what kind of BFing experience you will have without making the big purchase.

Re: Working mothers -- breast pump questions
With Miranda I went back to work and college when she was 6 months. I took a hand held pump with me, and I would pump and dump during the day.

I used the Medela Pump in Style. Left it at work. I nursed at home or if necessary used my sister's pump (sterilized). You could also have a manual pump at home too.

I take my Pump In Style advanced too work and home every day. It's very portable. I do have a hand pump at home, but had a bad experience with it when I first started pumping so I am scared to use it (which I need to get over).
Then again I just started working on Wednesday.

I agree with this. I have a rented hospital pump, and I also have a manual pump. I HATE the manual one. It takes longer than the electric, it hurts more, it is alot more noisy and your hand gets tired. By the way, I have the Avent ISIS hand pump -- supposed to be one of the better ones on the market. I am hoping not to need to buy a PIS since I am not going back to work until DD is 4.5-5 months old and I will hopefully have enough milk in my freezer to get her through to 6 months.

Re: Working mothers -- breast pump questions
I am renting the hospital grade Medela and just borrowed the Pump in Style. I have used the hospital grade for 2 months and will be returning it this week. I would definitely recommend renting first to see how it goes. The hospital grade pump is very heavy and, in my opinion, you wouldn't want to carry this to work every day.
