Re: World Cup
yeah, this is so BLAH for us.
russia I am "ok" about. I think it would be a nice trip and they have the sheer size to host a big one.
Qatar...disaster. the country has a smaller population than the amount of people who ATTENDED USA94.
plus, it's going to be hot as balls there.
so much of a financial investment, and the facilities will probably never be used again.
yet people in the region starve to death.
whatever FIFA. nice move.

Re: World Cup
I am so disappointed about this.

Re: World Cup
Russia, I can understand..
but Qatar.. seriously?? I couldn't imagine what FIFA was thinking on this one.. the country is the size of NYC.. and honestly, when the world comes to Qatar in 2022.. there will more tourists than locals..
Disappointed.. utterly disappointed..

Re: World Cup
My family are HUGE soccer fans and they often travel to the World Cup - my Facebook is exploding with how upset they are about this. So true - people starving and they'll be pouring money into a one time event. FIFA blew this one.

So I guess no one cares about the good that the money from the WC will bring to Qatar?

Re: World Cup
It's actually not as bad a place as I thought: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar
... The Asian Football Confederation's 2011 AFC Asian Cup finals will be held in Qatar in January 2011. It will be the fifteenth time the tournament has been held, and the second time it has been hosted by Qatar, the other being the 1988 AFC Asian Cup. ... Qatar has experienced rapid economic growth over the last several years on the back of high oil prices, and in 2008 posted its eighth consecutive budget surplus. ... Population: 1,696,563 ... Oil and gas have made Qatar the second highest per-capita income country – following Liechtenstein – and one of the world's fastest growing. ... While oil and gas will probably remain the backbone of Qatar’s economy for some time to come, the country seeks to stimulate the private sector and develop a “knowledge economy”. ... Qatar aims to become a role model for economic and social transformation in the region. Large scale investment in all social and economic sectors will also lead to the development of a strong financial market. ... In recent years Qatar has placed great emphasis on education. Citizens are required to attend government-provided education from kindergarten through high school. ...
It is HOT, though... the lowest temps it ever gets to is 55 degrees, at night, in the winter.... up to 115 degrees in the summer...
