worried.. ovulation question (long)
I have never ever had a regular menstral cycle. I could go 3-4 months without having a period. (I am on month 4 right now with no period) I went to the obgyn several years ago for some thyroid & hormone testing & everything came out normal. I am now 29 & since DH & I are want to be pregnant by early next year, I went back to the obgyn and told her that I was really worried about this because we wanted to start having kids. She tested me again & said everything was normal. BUT I still do not know why I go MONTHS without a period. She basically told me that all a woman needs is to have 4 periods a year & they will be able to get pregnant. And she just told me to start tying & see what happens.
Now I am sitting here kind of freaking out because If everything goes well, the earliest that I will give birth is at 31.. but I have a feeling that it will not be that easy for me to become pregnant.
I am going to find a new obgyn because I feel as though she really brushed me off & ddn't take me seriously.
Does this happen to anyone else with the abnormal cycle?
Should I go buy an ovulation kit? Can you ovulate without getting a period?

Re: worried.. ovulation question (long)
I think it is great you are being proactive about this. I would highly reccomend getting a second opinion. It is not normal to go 3-4 months with out a period. I would want to know what is going on, just so you can have an easier time when you ttc. Maybe you could start temping to see how when you are ovulating.

Re: worried.. ovulation question (long)
I was more irregular than you and all of my hormone levels were coming back normal too. For all intents and purposes you would think there was nothing wrong with me but I wasn't ovulating and rarely getting a period so my chances of conceiving were next to nothing. When we made the decision to get serious about TTC last summer I told my OB/GYN I didn't want to waste any time, they couldn't help me, and I wanted to take the next step. She gave me the referral to the RE. I met with the RE in Sept., they gave me Prometrium to bring on my periods each month and started me on Metformin to try and get my cycles to regulate on their own. Not much was happening each month but then on New Year's Eve I went in for a sono and I had a mature egg.........all on my own!! (No Clomid, No fertility meds.....that was going to be my next step) They gave me a trigger shot to ensure I ovulated, I had an IUI done to increase my odds and I got pregnant that cycle and I'm now due in Sept.
I know I was very fortunate but within 4 months of seeing an RE I was pregnant and after forever with my OB/GYN nothing was happening. You sound like you have the same issue as I did so I highly recommend seeing an RE. It will save you so much time and frustration and they know best how to treat you and see that you conceive as soon as possible. Good luck!!

You are doing the right thing by seeing another doctor. You deserve to have a doctor that will take it seriously and help you instead of brushing you off.

Re: worried.. ovulation question (long)
i have very irregular cycles also. I went off BC end of March and still no AF. My doc also wasn't worried when i saw him early June. I will go back early August and if still no AF he will run tests.
Come to think about it, everytime I told a gyno I had very irregular cycles, they never flinched, no concern. Seems so strange but maybe it's not as uncommon as we think.

That is exactly how my doctor was.. showed no concern at all. Maybe it isn't that uncommon but she knows my age & that I am worried about running out of time- lol

I just went to a new gyn a couple weeks ago. I told her we'd been taking the "whatever happens" approach to getting PG since our wedding last August, and just recently started tracking periods, ovulation, etc. She told me if I'm not PG in 4 months to come back and she'll refer me to an RE b/c she knows I want to get the ball rolling (I'm also 29, and I don't want to be 30 or 31 and still TTC). She also gave me an RX for my DH for sperm analysis. I was very impressed with her understanding of my feelings of not wanting to wait for a year.

I'm sorry, but no doctor should brush it off and not show concern. Not having a regular period is not normal at all and if you are of childbearing years, you need to know WHY you are not having a regular period. It infuriates me how some doctors are so laid back about it.
Be your own advocate, if you don't want to wait to get pregnant find a doctor that will help you NOW, not 2,3 or 4 months from now.
ETA: I was much like alot of the posters here who weren't pushy with their doctors when we first started to TTC. I wasted ALOT of time waiting for a period at my doctors suggestion. Well, it's 2 years later, still no baby and I'm pushing 38.

Re: worried.. ovulation question (long)
I was the same way. I went to my ob/gyn who told me it w as normal. A month later, still no period. I knew it my heart it wasn't normal, so I went to a new doctor and she immediately suspected PCOS. I would find a new doctor or better yet go straight to an RE if your insurance allows it. Irregular menstruation, especially going MONTHS without a period, is not normal at all.

Thanks!! I was seeing Dr. San Roman at Reproductive Specialists of New York. I always went to the Stony Brook office BUT they also have offices in West Islip and Mineola. My friend has been going to the Mineola office and is happy so far with everything there. Below is a link to their website. I wish you lots of luck and I hope you figure everything out and get your BFP soon!! http://www.rsofny.com/

It's not uncommon BUT it's also not something that should be brushed off and left untreated. Trust me.........I tried on and off for years and NOTHING ever happend!! That's the problem unfortunately with the OB/GYN's.............they don't act on anything quick enough and they keep you waiting around forever as if somehow an irregular cycle is going to fix itself!! That's why last year when we had enough of irregular cycles and disappointment I went in, flat out told her I was trying for months consistently with no luck (even though it wasn't the whole truth at that time), and asked to be referred to an RE. I was 32 and I simply was not willing to wait around on their timetable anymore. I knew there was something wrong with me and I wanted to fix it ASAP. Like I posted earlier, thank god I did what I did because I'm pregnant and because of my RE I got pregnant with very minimal intervention as opposed to many OB/GYN's who want to just stick you on Clomid right away without really figuring out what the true problem is. Like someone else said, you are your own best advocate and you need to do what's best for you. If you don't you will regret it.

Re: worried.. ovulation question (long)
you sound a lot like me! i recently posted about a similar thing i am going through right now.
i just went to the gyn. she is giving me 6 months to try and if nothing then she is referring me to a RE. i have never been regular. Finally at the beginning of this year i had enough and demanded bloodwork done and a pelvic sonogram. the bloodwork ruled out things like a low thyroid, wack hormone levels and PCOS. (you should do this...) the pelvic sonogram revealed a very large ovarian cyst that had to be surgically removed. i am now a month post-surgery and TTC.
in the meantime, i will tracking my periods, temping and charting, although the gyn. is not so sure if that will work at all since she is not sure i am ovulating at all and i may be ovulating only from one ovary if I am because my cycles are so long.
I would jump on this now. i would suggest getting bloodowrk done and a pelvic sonogram which can rule out a lot of things, or lead you closer to discover a possible problem.
