I would have to say yes. I would speak to an HR person.

Re: Would a MIL or FIL be considered immediate family...
I think a MIL or FIL would be considered immediate family. About laws, I don't think there is any, but each company might have their own policy about it.

Your spouse's parent (is how they list it for me) you can receive bereavement time.

Re: Would a MIL or FIL be considered immediate family...
At one company I worked for, the time off was shorter for an IL than for your parent

Re: Would a MIL or FIL be considered immediate family...
This happened to a friend of mine last week. His father was killed in an accident and his wife's job said IL's are not immediate family, so she didn't get the extended bereavement days they give for immediate family. I don't think that is very fair

Re: Would a MIL or FIL be considered immediate family...
it is really crazy that companies do that..
6 months ago my grandfather inlaw died. He lived in Florida, and I have known him for 11 years as a family member. DH was contemplating us driving down for the wake, but I was not able to get any time of work to go.

Re: Would a MIL or FIL be considered immediate family...
At my job, you get 3 days, whether it is for a parent, or a MIL or FIL. I have great benefits, though, so I know we usually get more generous time off than other places.
I'd take the time anyway and tell them to dock me.
