would brazilian hair straightening help this?

So, my hair is a wreck lately. Likely hormonal - hopefully the doctors can figure that all out (though I'm rapidly losing hope), but it honestly has never been the same since my treatments a few years back. It grew back in all sorts of different.

Anyway, it's falling out like crazy, it's greasy at the crown and brittle/dry at the ends... and just in general looks awful. It only goes up to just past my shoulders, as that is as far as it got after the last time I donated my hair just over a year ago.

When I put my hair in a pony tail, it's not smooth at all. I actually start to resemble Albert Einstein a bit. Chat Icon Seriously, I have all of these much too short hairs (broken? growing back in after falling out? I don't know...) and they basically stand up all around my head.

Is there some kind of treatment to help keep my wacky hair in check??? My hair is not curly... more like wavy. But the ugly kind of wavy. Not the awesome "just came from the beach" waves some women have. Mine is more like... half straight, half wavy, some hairs are fine and straight, some are ridiculously coarse and bendy.

I just want to have decent hair again. Heck, at this point, I'd be happy to just look like I didn't stick my finger in a socket. I've tried a bazillion hair products, it seems. My hair manages to find it's way out of all of them. So... am I stupid for looking into Brazilian straightening? Japanese straightening? I wish I could pull off the super short/shaved head look... but I've seen my bald head and it's not a pretty shape. Chat Icon

I wouldn't do any harsh chemical treatments like Brazilian or Japanese straighten if you hair is falling out, brittle at the ends, has short broken hairs or new regrowth etc.
It will only make it worse and damage it even more.

You need to get it back to health first.
I know you said you spoke to your doctor- do they have any ideas?

I'd also sit down with a GOOD stylist and ask what they suggest.

Are you taking a Hair Skin and Nail Vitamin with Biotin?

Sigh. I know you are right. But... desperation, you know? Chat Icon

So, then, here is another question. How does one find a GOOD stylist that would be able to suggest stuff? I feel like all the hair places I've been to, the stylist is aloof and not very willing to answer questions.

The doctors don't have any answers for me. My endo still hasn't called me back after 3 phone calls. She had suggested possibly thyroid, possibly pituitary tumor, possibly PCOS. The MRI came back clear, so yay for no tumor (and yay for a patient portal, because she sure as heck hasn't told me herself that it came back clear!) Some of my hormones are slightly out of whack, but my thyroid levels all come back in somewhere around the normal range. My blood sugar is rapidly creeping up and I'm getting scary close to entering full blown type II. I'm ready to do some reading into holistic treatments at this point, because the doctors haven't helped. But I guess this part belongs on the health board... sorry for the tangent there! Chat Icon

Haven't tried Biotin... it really helps?

How about trying a dermatologist? They might have some suggestions for you. I agree with PP, I wouldn't do anything harsh to your hair now.

I was going to suggest a derm as well- they might have some more insight.

Biotin does work well for me- I take a hair skin and nails that i feel helped my hair feel a bit thicker and grow faster.

Maybe too simple of a solution, but have you tried a good blow dryer and/or a leave in conditioner? Those 2 things made a world of difference for me (the Rusk Speed Freak dryer and Paul Mitchell "Original The Conditioner" leave in conditioner are what I use. Sometimes I also use Satin Hair Serum by Living Proof - more expensive ad "heavier" than the Paul Mitchel, but might be worth it for you). I also have "swavy" hair - straight/wavy, that looks a mess if I just let my hair air dry, and these 2 products have made such a difference for me

I wouldn't do a chemical treatment. My hair has been getting very thin and falling out a lot. I found out I had thyroid problems. Anyway, I'm taking medicine for the thyroid. I took Biotin and it didn't help that much.

Right now, I'm with multivitamins that include Biotin. I'm also taking collagen and I apply castor oil twice a week (a friend swears by it). It has been falling less, although it is still very thin.

Have you tried olaplex? It really transformed my hair, it was getting brittle bc I dye it so often and now it's soft and back to normal even though I still keep coloring it.

I also heard good things about applying castor oil as Adri suggested above. I also have "swavy" hair and it's so annoying! Another thing that I feel helps slightly is using sulfate-free hair products such as the Ever Pure line.
