Would this bother you? Because the more I think about this, the more it pi$$es me off!
So this morning, I get a call from my landlord (Who lives upstairs) telling me that shes coming into my apartment to let the Verizon guy re-wire something for the internet connection. Okay.. Whatever. (Thank GOD my apt isn't too messy!) What bothers me is the fact that she tells me this AS SHE IS WALKING INTO MY APARTMENT and to top it all off, she has to get into my closet which is BEHIND my 42inch flat screen tv and the stand, and all the wiring that goes with it. So, not only are there people in my apartment when Im not home, all my furnature is being moved. This is bothering me.. alot.
Yet another reason why I cant wait to buy my own house. I hate HATE HATE knowing that people are walking into my apartment when Im not home. Uughhh!!
Okay vent over.
But seriously.. Am I over reacting?

No you are not! I hate when people, any people, come in basically unexpected and unannounced.

That would bother me too. My landlady gives us a couple of days notice. Can you ask her if next time maybe she can give you more time so you could possible accomodate them (move your own tv for peace of mind)?

my DH and I rented an apartment for a year and it was the WORST. The landlord went in numerous times for things and I hated it. THen H showed the apartment while we were still living there, so People were in and out. We wound up buying a coop bc I couldn't stand someone being in my home.

Re: Would this bother you? Because the more I think about this, the more it pi$$es me off!
I think you have every right to be pi$$ed. If it were me I would have told her no that she couldn't enter the apartment. By law I believe that they have to give you 24 hours notice (unless it is an Emergency). When I met my ex he lived in a basement apartment and the landlord would come and go as he pleased. One day we came home and found the landlord ripping out the kitchen. ***!!!!
It made ex move and we got an apartment together. The first thing we did was change the locks (the landlord still doesn't know) if she needs to get in she gives me notice if not she doesn't get in. I figure if it is an Emergency they could always bust down the door!!!

It's not nice, sure. But our lease specifically says that they can enter the place at any time for any reason.
Yet another disadvantage of renting.

What does your lease say about your landlord just walking in wothout prior notice or consent? I would diplomatically explain to her that you don't want strangers in your apt. when your not home, especially when they need to move your furniture! You should let her know in advance that they/she will be responsible for any costs associated with repairing any broken furniture or carpet cleaning , if necessary.

Yes, I would be very upset. This happened to me before when I rented and I raged...I'm sorry, but you have your right to privacy and your landlord needs to be giving you more than a seconds notice.

I agree, I live in a complex and the reapir guy had to come for the fire alarm and went while we werent home and left a note. I was fuming. I told them unless there is a fire stay out if we are not there. And its not like you landlord just found out, she had to know they were coming. she could have told you so YOU could prepare for them.

I would be just as mad as you especially considering you didn't have any notice. I don't like when people are in my house unattended!!!

It was a studio basement apartment and the landlord want to redo the kitchen but never told EX. He met me at the train station and we went to his apartment and they were ripping out the sink and cabinets. and they were using his glass table as a work bench. Needless to say, the place was a reck and the cops were called. landlord insisted that since it was his house he could do whatever he wanted and didn't need to inform EX

Ditto! They never go in a tenants apartment unless someone is home.
A friend of mine rented a basement apt. a few years ago... she had the feeling her landlord that lived upstairs was in her apartment when she wasn't home but couldn't prove it.... Until one day she came home and found the landlords cordless phone under her couch

Yeah, it would bother me... We have our suspicions that our landlords were going into our apt. when we weren't home- on numerous occasions we would come home and the TV was on.

I don't think you are overreacting one bit. She obviously knew about the appointment in advance because you have to schedule those things, and she should have told you then.

i think you have every right to tell your landlord you need at least 24 hrs notice next time she needs access to your apartment.
you could have been doing something with your TV then - what if you were well into a movie - ding dong - we need to move this???? i would be furious!

Re: Would this bother you? Because the more I think about this, the more it pi$$es me off!
All of my leases note that I can enter the premises for any reason. For some tenants I have a clause that requires 48 hours notice and for some (different property manager) 3 days written notice is required for entry.
If I have to enter w/o notice that is fine too so long as I notifiy the tenant within 24 hours that I was in the apartment and who was with me (if anyone).
I think your LL knew in advance that they were coming though. I never heard of getting a same day appointment with Verizon.
