would u wake a newborn to feed
so last night, DS went down at 9 PM and i woke up at 1:00AM and he was still sleeping so i gave him another half and hour and i ended up waking him b/c my boobs were hurting, i really believe he would have slept longer if i let him. The doctor and lactation women said once he has had two weight gains i can start letting him sleep 4-5 hours (he has met this and is already over his birth weight at 13 days old) i just feel guilty letting him sleep that much b/c i know his diaper is dirty and he's prob hungry but if he's sleeping i should take advantage of it, right? also i found he ate more frequently yesterday so i am wondering if this is another reason he slept so long. How do you know when and how long to let them sleep and at what point do you try to increase it during the night (at 13 days old is it OK he sleeps 3-4 hours straight). I guess i just am a little confused. how long does all ur newborn sleep for (and i mean 0-3 months)? Thanks!

NO!!! I never woke up Jordana to eat. If the doctor's aren't worried about his weight, they I wouldn't worry about it. When he is hungry, trust me he will wake up.

Re: would u wake a newborn to feed
Both my children have always been excellent sleepers. I have never woke them up to feed them. My daughter was eating every 3-4 hours since she was born and started sleeping through the night (9-7) at a month old and now sleeps from 7-7 at 10 1/2 months old.

I only woke them up to feed when they were very small and under their birth weight, I was told to only let them go 5 hours at the most, but after they reached a good weight they were okay to sleep more.

No, don't wake him up. He will wake up when he is hungry. There is no need to wake him up. Take advantage, because their schedules change all the time. So, you might be able to sleep a few more hours these few days and all of the sudden he will wake up more often at night. Specially when he is going through a growth spurt. Enjoy any sleep you can get.

i agree, let him sleep. they grow while they sleep and hey, what's a little extra shut eye for you going to hurt? besides, babies will always let you know when they are hungry. I've never heard of the baby that didn't cry when he was hungry.

Re: would u wake a newborn to feed
DS wakes up everytime like clockwork when he is hungry. He wakes up every 3 hours and has one 4.5 hour stretch during the day. MY mom told me not to wake a sleeping baby they will let u know when they are hungry. And she was right.

I am in the minority . If you are BF;ing in the first six weeks you are building your milk supply. I went by the rule not to let the baby go more than 5 hours at night. If you want to I would pump then!
