would you
give up a job that you only have to work 3 shifts for and make good money for a job where you would work 5 days, for LESS money, and MUCH longer hours?????
GRANTED, you may pick up a skill that you could use anywhere and once you have that position you could make a decent living.

Re: would you
I gave up bartending to get "regular" job
6 years later- and I barely make in a week what I used to make in 2 or 3 nights
and I have more then doubled my starting salary
just make sure you can live off the money- it was a huge adjustment for me in terms of lifestyle

Re: would you
It depends on where I see myself in ten years..... do you want to get married again... have kids... which lifestyle would be better suited with all the life changes that a different job would bring. KWIM?
ETA Yes, I did it. I went from a medical biller to an electrician. Way different life styles.

Re: would you
It depends. You haven't given us enough information (though I'm guessing you may not be able to post it all here). f my current job were somewhat of a "dead end" job and/or wasn't something I could see myself doing forever, I might. If on top of that, the new job was a training opportunity that would lead to a better career and lifetime opportunities for me, yes, I probably would.
It takes hard work and sacrifice to get to a good place sometimes. It's worth it. That said, if you did decide to take the other job, make sure you'd still be able to support yourself.
It's not as easy of a question as it seems at first look. Sure more money and fewer hours is definitely more attractive in the short-term. However, you need to ask yourself where you want to be in the future and what you should be doing today to get there.

Re: would you
Oh I think I was posting at the same time you were!
It seems like it is something you are really passionate about, too -- that to me would be a big part of the decision. If you are really passionate about it and love it, the hours may not feel as long. You might wind up loving what you do!

Same here. I wish I had never given up bartending. Skills mean nothing if they do not translate into $$, IMO.

Re: would you
I think you need to answer a lot of questions for yourself before making the decision:
Well, WILL you be able to apprentice there, or is it just a remote possibility? IS there REALLY room for advancement? Can you really live off the pay cut comfortably? What is the room for salary increases and how long do you think it would take to get there? Are you willing to keep one or two nights at the bar to supplement your income if necessary?
These are all questions you need to ask yourself. I have no idea how people become tattoo artists (if they go to school, etc.), so I can't really give a super-informed opinion. If tattoo artists do have to go to school, would you be able to go working the new hours?

i would have said no normally... but you just listed several good reasons why you SHOULD take the job.
it's all personal preference... i bartended for a little while (not my best summer ) and i totally understand about being on your feet and working late nights... this sounds like a better opportunity, IMO, especially since there is room for "advancement."

Re: would you
while you're young, working as a bartender is an excellent way to make money (and have a good time)
as you get older, you may want more stability. Managing a retail establishment can certainly give you many skills going forward. Decide if you really want to become a tattooist. Also, once you manage a retail store or shop, you could go on to other management jobs.
Bartending is customer service, so is retail..either way I think you will be a success because you already are.
Think of the big picture 10-20 years down the road.
I know physically, you won't have that long being a bartender due to physical limitations, especially since you have a bad back.
Also, if you hate it, could you come back to the bar until you decide to try some thing else?

Re: would you
Jes, also talk to people in the biz. I know you are already familiar with so many artists, but talk to people of all ages and as an interested colleague, not as a customer.
Many artists also have physical restrictions b/c of their jobs. I think tattooing is right up your alley. I've seen yoru work & the art that you have produced & I think you are very very talented. I also think you would be comfortable in that atmostphere. I just want you to be 100% informed about it.

Same here, and honestly- i was so glad that i did. IMO, bartending isn't really just a job- it's a lifestyle. and, it just wasn't the one that i wanted anymore (but- that was me, we're very different).
What about still keeping a night at the bar while you try out the new job? that will balance out the money issue for a while and give you a chance to see if you like the new position.
