Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
There is so much controversy surrounding the TOH Animal Shelter.
To be honest I am a fairly new Nassau County resident and hadn't heard of the controversy until after we adopted our dog from there.
And she is the most wonderful dog in the world. I truely believe she was the "Dog for us" and that it was fate that brought us together. Some people when I say this, but...it's what I believe.
Anyway...
Knowing the controversy, would that steer you away from adopting an animal from that shelter?
Or does it give you even more reason to take an animal out of the situation and give it a good home?

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
I was just thinking about this last night, so funny. DH wants a dog more than anything but right now, our house isn't the right size for the larger type of dog that he wants (lab, pit bull, etc) and dogs are expensive so we aren't in the right spot right now. But when we are, I wouldn't know where to go. At NS and Bid a wee, we would know that they were treated awesome, etc but also, if people don't adopt from the town shelters then they are just left there to die. SO I guess I would really want to save an animal and get it from the town shelter, save from death and abuse.
We got two cats from the TOH shelter a few years ago, they were sisters so just took both and the one ended up having a stoke less than a year later and we had to put her down, she was 3. Our vet said that she was probably born with a heart defect since she had a stroke so young. I was heartbroken. Her sister was actually adopted by my roommate at the time but she started to spend a lot of time at her boyfriends house and whenever she would be gone for long periods of time her cat would pee all over the place and it sucked because we rented a house with hardwood floors, I didn't want to destroy this mans house. She decided to move in with her boyfriend and didn't want to take the cat and said she'd try to find someone to take the cat. It was a sweet, sweet cat, just sad so she peed, so I didn't want her just thrown at someones house so I asked my mom if she could try and take her and see if she peed there too and she didn't, so that just proved that she peed because her momma was gone so much.

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
As much as I would love to spare an animal from the house of horrors that TOH shelter is, I don't think I could stomach going there and only coming out with one, knowing what probably will happen to the rest. Also, every adoption they make just helps them and I want no part in that. Try to visit a rescue!

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
I rescued my dog from a kill shelter (not TOH but NYCACC)...no regrets at all.
Look at it this way...either you adopt or if the animal gets lucky enough they get pulled by another adopter or rescue. If not...well then I hate kill shelters

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
I guess I am amoung the opinion that at least I got one dog out of that enviornment and into a healthy and loving home.
When we adopted her she was a small dog in amoung the rooms with the big, loud, and crazy dogs.
We went down the aisle and got to the almost-end and there she was, quiet as can be, just looking at us. She looked scared because all of those dogs were so noisy. Luckily we were the first people to put an application in on her. We couldn't adopt a big dog because my DH is allergic to the fur of most larger breeds. Smaller breeds are better for him with his allergies/asthma, so we put in for her right away.
I wouldn't have wanted her to be there any longer then she was. But I also get heart broken when I think about all of the other animals there who have been there for SO long without homes.
There is a sweet dog named Mable who I always notice when I go to visit. Sometimes I go back, just to look around, and Mable has been there for years and it breaks my heart.
Ultimately I am glad we got our Charlie from there and so glad she is in a good home. She couldn't be any more loved. But I do wish we could take more animals from there, if we had the money/space for more pets.

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
Yes. I would never penalize the animals there b/c of the controversy. Makes me want to save them all the more.

Noone is more "anti-TOH" than me and yet, I beg everyone I can to go there to adopt. You truly are saving a life when you adopt from a kill shelter. As hard as it is to walk through those kennels, those dogs are really counting on us to save them!

Did you know they are accepting applications for volunteers? No real program yet, but applications are being accepted. Please go in and fill one out, especially since you obviously have a soft spot in your heart for these animals! The animals will finally have a voice when those kennels are flooded with animal loving volunteers.

DH and I have talked about it. I guess before I do something like that I would have to find out what the volunteers' roles will be in the shelter. I am 4.5 months pregnant so I don't know how perminant of a fixture I can be there in the upcoming months. I would love to help if there were something that I could do. I am part of a group on FB that is looking to see major changes made at the TOH shelter and I guess that should be my first place to find out what the roles and responsibilities will be, and if I am able to do it.
One thing that worries me is that I will fall in love with so many animals there and will want to take them all home! It would be unfair to the dog that we already had if we took in more pets. We wouldn't be able to afford the vet care, good food, and have the time to play with her, exercise her and give her one on one attention the way that we do now!
One day DH and I will have to buy a farm!

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
Melbernai - Congratulations on your pregnancy! How exciting! I completely understand why you are hesitant to fill out an application but would encourage you to do so anyway (even if you can't commit right now). The bottom line is that they are only accepting applications. We are still waiting to hear of any orientation despite the fact that a Volunteer Coordinator was hired full time over a month ago. It would be great to see the "Volunteer Coordinator's" office flooded with applications. Call me cynical but someone's gotta give her work to do and don't forget to vote on November 8th! Kate Murray supports a kill shelter and Gary Port supports a no kill shelter. The choice is very easy for me!

It gives me even MORE reason to adopt from there. I only adopt from kill shelters. Reality is, you cant save them all.
I dont really understand the controversy.
I adopted my dog from a kill shelter, I saved 2 lives that day... the dog I took home & the dog that could now go into that pen.
Anytime Ive been to that shelter all the employees were very friendly and truely cared about those animals.

Yes and post pictures!
Like I said --- our TOH dog was "made" for us ... controversial shelter and all, I know she was the dog for us and I am so glad that she has a loving home.
Bravo to you for adopting! The best way to get a pet if you ask me!

I am so happy to hear that your experience at TOHAS was a good one but unfortunately, for the majority, that isn't the case.
When I think of the employees there (some of whom I've known and witnessed in action over the past 9 years), I think about the "Kill the Kitty" video. Yes, one of the women in the video was transfered out of the shelter, but the other is still there with the title of kennel supervisor.
I think of the picture of the kennel workers, dancing and posing in front of the gravely ill cats and kittens, in front of the dead dog freezer, then posting them all over facebook.
I think about the employees who spread vicious rumors about the only 2 rescuers that frequented the building, saving thousands of animals a year, paying expenses out of their own wallets.
I think of all the days that I walked the kennels petting the dogs through their cages, and not one employee was in sight.
Engraved in my mind is how the employees would hose down the cages, wearing rain boots but the dogs were left soaked to sit in puddles of water.
I could go on and on about the employees there but it's not about them, it's about the animals.
When I think about the animals there, I think about the mama dog that hemorraged to death overnight in her cage despite the fact that rescuers begged the employees to get her emergency medical care. I think about Baby Girl, Sammy, Ilsa, Aubrey & all of the other animals killed there with no attempt to outreach to rescue. I think about the burn marks on dog's paws, I think about the bottle fed kittens, many of whom have died in the home of kennel workers. I could go on and on about the animals that have suffered there due to the inexperienced and overpaid staff. Kate Murray publically calls this shelter a "Safe Haven." A kill shelter is anything but safe. Right now, the most upsetting thing to me is the fact that despite an over $7 million dollar budget, there are no biscuits for the dogs and no hot water (as of yesterday).
Newsday reported today that State Comptroller will be auditing the shelter and that this shelter's budget is the same as the City's Shelter budget. TOHAS took in approx. 3500 animals, the City took in approx. 38,000 animals. Something is very wrong with this picture.
If you got this far, I thank you for reading and apologize for the heartbreak this post may have caused you. I am passionate about these animals and am hopeful that through hard work and many, many, many prayers, this shelter will see a new day very soon for the sake of our homeless shelter pets.

Re: Would you adopt from TOH Shelter?
UPDATE: We've got him! Picked him up yesterday. He seems to be adjusting well, we even think he might be housebroken (fingers crossed). He turned into a totally different dog once we walked out of the shelter. And it was nice, while we were there several people came to pick up their adopted dogs, and there were some dogs in the hallways designed as adopted. Nice to see that at least some of the dogs are getting out.
He's a big hot mess right now, so dont want to post any pictures until his hair grows back and we can get him coiffed and groomed and all prettied up. I will, I promise!

Our dog was a hot mess also when we adopted her. Shaved belly from being fixed and she was a cone-head. I remember looking at her and thinking that she was just so strange looking...such a weird mixed breed.
Over the months I have become convinced that she's the most beautiful dog in the world though...lol, she's grown into her funny looking scraggely head!
I remember the first 2 weeks all she did was snuggle us. She was like "what is this, people who love me and are petting me as much as I want to be pet?" She loved the attn and has turned into the biggest ham!
All the best to you and your dog!

Sherwood- You couldn't have gotten that good boy out of there soon enough. As of yesterday there was no heat in the kennels and no hot water (needed for sanitary reasons and to clean out the wounds of injured animals). $7.4 Million dollars and no heat on these chilly days and nights. Absolutely disgraceful. I'm sure your new addition must be nice and warm in his forever home! Congratulations again!

Thanks! Sorry I havent posted sooner but its been crazy to say the least. He's a spaniel mix, they say between 3-5 but we think he's closer to 5. Can't wait to get him bathed and groomed this weekend..they fixed him in the shelter so needed to wait until he healed a bit before we could do that.

Seriously. Thats just awful. Is it that their heat is broken and they havent fixed it, or are the kennels just unheated? At least our little guy is very warm and very loved right now....the rest of those poor dogs though...
