Would you apply? (job related)

I REALLY want to get a job specifically in a particular place. They pay you $200 every 2 weeks towards health or daycare benefits. And with just having the second baby, we NEED the money for daycare.

The thing is that there is an opening but they highly prefer someone with thorough knowledge of Excel and Access. I know a lot about Excel, but not all of it, but I've never used Access before though I know it's a database program I have used many other proprietary database programs before. So my question is, would you apply for this job even though you know you don't have some of the experience they're looking for? I'm not worried about not learning the program, because I'm great with the computer, I just know that many places don't want to have to train people. Would it be a waste of time to even apply?

What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I'd apply! Access is easy to learn and you can always buy a book and learn it before you start.

Re: Would you apply? (job related)

Personally, i would be nervous that my job would entail using access all the time and not having any experience wouldnt look good.

Why dont you try and learn it before going for the interview....

I would absolutely apply! Sounds like a great opportunity for you and your family. You said you know alot about computers. I knew alot about computers and nothing about powerpoint....I learned it in a day!

You should definitely apply. What do you have to lose? And you can learn Access very quickly I'm sure.

Definitely apply and learn the skills before the interview!

As a friend of mine from law school said about ads that say "prefer", "I'd prefer a rich, blonde, 5'9 model with a penthouse apartment and a great car, but I'll go out with anyone"Chat Icon

Absolutely-- you can pick that stuff up easily and I would not discount an employee with a great resume if their knowlegdge of the software was not that extensive-- as long as it is something you know you will be able to pick up easily.

Re: Would you apply? (job related)

As a recruiter, I say YES!!!

Job descriptions don't say how important certain requirements are. I have clients who say you have to have PowerPoint then when I ask how important they say well.. if you have someone you think is good go ahead and send them. Let them make the decission.

It comes down to a personality match 1/2 the time. Just make sure you have what programs you do know on your resume. If I see a resume with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, AS400, SAP, Quickbooks, whatever. It's says computer literate & knowledgeable. You can say your "familiar" w/ Access and brush up if necessary.

Good Luck!!!

P.S Can you tell me the company?? I'm always looking for new accounts!
