Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
We sold our first home in June and I thought the couple was going to appreciate our home the way we did. We did a lot of work to the inside. Well I drove by last week because I was in the neighborhood and I was embarassed by the way the outside looked. The backyard frow what I could see was a mess. Their was toys all over the backyard for their daughter, fencing leaning against the neighbores fence for the front and the grass looked pretty high in the back. In the front they sporatically planted sunflowers so what were nice clean beds with shurbs have sunflowers that our old neighbore thought they were weeds . They also only mow the lawn until it gets high and even then it isn't the entire lawn it is only the part infront of the house and not on the other side of the driveway. I feel bad for my old neighbore's because now our old house is "that" house on the block that kinda sticks out. I know I shouldn't care but I wish they took pride in owning it more. I was told that inside isn't any better. Has anyone else gone through this after they moved?

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
I don't think I would be very upset, but then the home we sold was a co-op and not a house. I like to think the people are taking care of it, but if they are not, they are not.
Actually, the front of our house got kind of weedy by early fall and wasn't kept as well as the previous owners had it. But we're about to have a baby and needed to do work on the interior, plus buy baby things and some furniture for the house, so we just didn't have time. Next year I'd like to do more with it, but this year, I just had to accept that it wasn't going to be great.
Just mentioning this because the people who bought may be in a bad position to do much with the house at the moment. It's possible that they are just sloppier too.

The same thing happened to me. Over the summer I drove past the house we sold last December. The grass was at least a foot high and the mailbox was broken and the screen part of the screen door was missing. It looked pretty bad. We put a lot of work into that house too.

I'd be upset! You put a lot of work into the house - it feels like you did all of that for nothing!
I felt bad at the beginning in our house - we hadn't had an opportunity to mow the lawn or anything.
Right now, it pretty much looks exactly the same out front as the previous owners left it - we're hoping to make it a little nicer but, we ran out of time before it got cold - hopefully next year!

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
Doesn't bother me. When I was younger, we moved to another house. We had a lot of fruit trees, and tall evergreen bushes along the road, for privacy. Months later, we see that they took down almost all the fruit trees, and most of the hedges.
Oh well, it's not my house. If I really wanted to keep the house the way it was, I should have kept the house. (In my example, I wasn't old enough to buy a house, but the same idea applies).

I would be upset if I liked my neighbors. If i didn't like them, or if I no longer have contact with any neighbors or no longer live in the area, oh well. Not my fault.

I don't think it would bother me though! As long as they aren't your neighbors!

It would not bother me at all. If I sold the house that meant I decided not to live there anymore. So why the attachment? Unless I was forced to sell for financial reasons. Then I would be resentful and would have a hard time letting go.
I would feel sorry for the neighbors though.

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
The house my grandfather built was sold this past summer. When I drove past it a few months later, they had Christmas lights hanging all over the place (which stayed on for the rest of the year) and the lawn was brown. My mother would have had a heart attack.
It's just not the same. But hey, they got their money for it.

I think it was harder for me to see my childhood home being changed completely
they made it so much nicer and leveled out the back yard- made the driveway less steep- it made me cry to see it!

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
It would depend........I really don't care if the people who bought our trailer let it go. I HATED it there, but if we ever had to leave our house we're in now....I would feel sad. I would feel like my memories were not being respected and that all of the HARD work I put into making our house look nice was just tossed away. Try not to get to upset.......it's not your house anymore

It is very sad when this happens. It happened to the house that I grew up in. The people that bought it from my parents lived like animals.
Same here. Turns out the last two owners have been like that. To boot, they just painted the house bright blue

Same thing happened to us and we're living next door with my in laws so we see everything The new owners did not mow the lawn for about 2 mos until a neighbor suggested that they mow it One of the neighbors actually came up to me and said the house and yard have not looked the same since you sold it. I was upset at first, but I am getting over it. What can I do, you know?

A little, but there's nothing you can do so I'd try to just get over it and worry about things you can control.

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
Even though it would be irrational and unreasonable, it would bother me. I worry about what will happen when my parents sell the home I grew up in... but their neighbors all take beautiful care of their houses, so I'm hoping my parents will (eventually) sell to someone who will do the same.
I think it would bother me mainly b/c it always bothers me when people don't take care of what they have. It would also bother me b/c I would feel guilty -- I'd actually feel bad for my old neighbors.
Granted, I'd move on and not be preoccupied with it for too long, but it would certainly make me sad.

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
The previous owners of my old house left the house a complete sty...it hadn't been updated, etc. When we finished renovating the inside and out, the former owner's son went by and was upset that we "touched" the appearance of the place
I can't even stand to go by the old house because it chokes me up so It doesn't help that STBX lives right across the street and I HAVE to see it when I drop off/pick up Amber. It still looks the same but I know they did some stuff to the inside (changed colors of the walls, took up the carpeting).

Re: Would you be upset if a home you sold wasn't cared for properly by the new owners?
that happened to us after we sold the house I grew up in.
Of course leaving your childhood home can be hard emotionally to begin with, you have such great memories and all, and then when we drove by last it wasn't kept up at all the way my parents had it. It was a bit depressing to see the house not looking it's best.
I think it's understandable to feel that way!

I think just the fact that he was not handy at all, seemed to know nothing about a home, and that they travel so much for work - they didn't seem to be too into how the house would be.
I didn't think they would be complete slobs -- just didn't think they would be anywhere near as clean as you guys were! I could have eaten off your floor!
