Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
If there was a huuge yard and a updated home? The price is no bargain... With a small Ds? Right in front of a traffic light?? DH loves this house but am just a little hesitant about WWYD??

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
Hell no. That was the one thing we were dead against. No double yellow roads. Ds is a runner, he books whenever he can, so I know in our neighborhood he is ok if he bolts as it's really only people who live here that drive here. Think noise, accidents, traffic. Simply things like pulling out of your driveway will be annoying.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
No. We were in the same situation, great house, great price...busy street. It's only 1 lane going each way but close to a major highway and there is a light on each corner. SO...we opted to purchase the home. The traffic doesn't really bother us too much unless we're trying to watch TV, there's siren's going by which is kind of annoying. HOWEVER, we don't have any small children yet and i'm terrified for when we do. Even just playing out front with my niece and nephew, i'm constantly paranoid that a car will veer off the road. The speed limit is 35 but people fly by doing over 60mph sometimes. If you have a small child, I would definitely tell you to keep looking. It doesn't seem like a big deal but i'm terrified any time a child is over, even just walking down the driveway to the car. I'm afraid they'll accidentally saunter into the road or a car accident will cause someone to come onto our property!!

No, I definitely wouldn't. The safety issue would really freak me out, especially with children around. It would also be difficult to resell if you ever needed to.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
When we moved back to LI (after 13 years) we bought a house on a "double yellow line" aka: a busy road. It wasn't the busiest of roads but there was a fair amount of traffic flow. We had a gorgeous backyard with a pool which made us feel like we were in the middle of nowhere. Our main living areas (fam room, kitchen etc) were in the back of the house while the bedrooms were in the front. Truthfully, the noise was minimal and didn't bother us at all. That being said, my girls were then Jr. High age. I had no worries about those "little one" issues- ie: wandering out onto the street, playing in the driveway, street etc. Their friends lived in all parts of town at that age so having neighborhood friends didn't matter. I would NOT have considered the house if they were young for those reasons. When they were young, living in a neighborhood among other kids was huge. They could ride their bikes and walk to friends houses close by without traffic issues. And as part of a neighborhood, we all watched out for other's children. I'd be sad if they hadn't had that experience. Good luck with whatever choice you make.
Edited to add that the previous poster is correct. It was more difficult to resell. It did sell but not as fast as the exact same homes in the neighborhood behind us.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
No, I honestly wouldn't. I don't even have any DC and I still wouldn't. First, I don't want to listen to the traffic. Second, I have dogs and God forbid one ran out, OMG, I would die.
My BIL and SIL live on a very busy street in Centereach. It stinks for the kids (13, 9, 4) because they can't play in the front yard, ride their bikes/trikes/ride-on toys in the front of the house..and there are no sidewalks either.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
We did it wasn't what we wanted but with a budget of $225K we had to be realistic. We are used to it somewhat as far as kids what i have seen is most people don't have small kids playing in the front yard so proper security in the back yard is a must and you must teach street smarts like don't go past the driveway, etc. I never have issues getting out of the driveway, usually getting in when the light is red is a PIA but I just drive up and turn around.
If you have a choice I wouldn't go for it unless its a main road that is near a village or a lively town spot. I live walking distance to all so that is the perk of living on a main street.

No way. I wouldn't even consider a house on a main road or one on a double yellow line.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
I wouldn't for the reasons mentioned above , plus you have to figure that if so many people feel this way, you will probably have a hard time selling if you ever decide to move.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
it depends on HOW busy the street is i guess... when DH and I were house hunting, we saw a really nice house that was priced good, but it was on a really high traffic road. he got mad at me because he wanted to bid on the house, but i said no. it was too high traffic, and there wasn't even a shoulder for people to park in the street if we had guests, etc. plus when we have kids i would be afraid for them to play in the front yard. we ended up buying a house that is on the corner of a sort of a busy street, but its not so much busy like the other road.

No - you can always remodel a house but, you can't change its location.

Re: Would you buy a house on a very busy main street
Oh yea if there is no shoulder to park then hell no and if its like LIE service road we wouldn't buy. Our road is a double yellow with a light, both sides have a shoulder single lanes and we are smack dab in the middle of all the schools so we mostly have school traffic. We also have a deli two doors down and can walk to the train station and into the village so for us its a good reason to buy on a busier road but like on a service road or the cross street of ours which has no parking on the road i would never buy.
