Re: Would you buy a house that didn't have a separate dining room?
No.
Our current house does not have a formal dining room. The next house will. We do have an eat in area that can sit up to 10 people which is perfect for us for holidays/entertaining.
DH and I usually eat at the island (barstools) when it's just the 2 of us.
I wouldnt want not to have an option.

Re: Would you buy a house that didn't have a separate dining room?
NO!!!!!
I have a levitt house. No DR. The kitchen is small. It's a nightmare to move around the table. It has to be folded most of the time for like a sitting for 2.
I am DREAMING of a place to have a decent meal and not feel cramped.
Actually the DR situation is the ONLY reason I have been concidering moving or talking about extensions on my current house.
I won't even talk about when family comes and meals.

We did but we took down a wall before we moved in so we would have a dining room. We bought a 4 bed original cape and took out one bedroom to make a dining room.

I don't know, we have a dining room but not an eat in kitchen, which is fine for us, but if it were the other way around I might not like it, I would want a place to to eat thats separate from the kitchen if I had people over.

No. When house hunting this has always been at the top of my "must have" list. If you ever intend on entertaining or hosting holidays you need to either have a formal dining room or an EIK large enough to accommodate a lot of people.

Not unless there was someway we could make a dining room especially if it wasn't a large eat in kitchen

A DR was a nice to have for us not a must have. However, a roomy EIK was a must have.
We have both a DR and a decent size EIK, we do not use the DR much (of course, we only furnished it within the last few months).

Re: Would you buy a house that didn't have a separate dining room?
First things first... Is this a forever home or a starter home?
From the responses, you can see that a home will be a tough sell without one for people who like to entertain. However, consider that there are homes that will always be starters. I have one of those. I don't have a formal dining room or an eat in kitchen but I do have an area between the living room and kitchen that I can fit 4 people comfortably around.
Although we could expand our home, in this economy and with the situation as a starter home, it probably won't be financially feasible.
We entertain outside in good weather. If the weather doesn't look good, the party switches to my sister's house. I don't entertain more than 4 people in the winter.
I would take advice, but do what's right for your own family and what is important to you and your husband.

Re: Would you buy a house that didn't have a separate dining room?
When I first looked for a house I didn't think a seperate dinning room was a big deal. It wasn't a deal breaker for me. I ended up with a split that has a dinning room and honesty I am so happy that I have one. I can't tell you how many family gatherings I've had and we eat in it everyday. Now that I have one, if I ever buy another house it will be on my must have list.
If you can add a eating area to the kitchen or if the LR is large enough to add one it wouldn't be a problem if not I think you should keep looking
