Would you choose a deck or patio for us? [Pic & Poll]
The deck is coming apart at the seams, it has to be ripped up regardless. The deck is 15 inches off the ground, and the steps into the house are another 15 inches.
We always said patio because we want privacy and don't want to see over into our neighbor's yard either. We are talking paver patio that would not go as wide as the deck. It would stop before the extension that you see on the right side.
The backyard is SMALL. The fence is just off to the left of the picture, it's not big. So if we put in another deck, we're afraid of overwhelming it again. We fell the current deck is way too big.
What would you do?

In some towns, there are tax/permit benefits to having a patio, instead of a deck attached to the house.

Patio 100%. We are in the middle of ripping more then half of our very old decking down and I can't wait for it to be gone and have grass and a backyard now. A patio would look gorgeous in your yard, no matter what the size. Nice paver or brick steps up to the house. Very nice. I'm sure you would really enjoy it. GL! Can't wait to see what material you guys go with. A nice slate would be goregous.

I was going to say deck but than saw you said you have a small yard, so I would def go with a patio.

patio!! We are in the process of having a pool and patio put into our yard, so we just went through the whole process of picking out pavers...there are so many different choices!

I would just make sure that the stoop/steps from your back door were bigger to ease the transition (makes it easier when you're going in and out when your arms are full with food, trays, etc..)

If your house was higher off the ground I would say deck but since you also have a small yard, then a patio is a much better choice for your situation.

This is amazing. Every person I've talked to verbally has said deck! Trex deck, specifically. I really want the patio because I want a nicer transition from house to patio to grass. I love to garden, so I have a lot of ideas too.
