Would you decline a job in this economy?

I got an offer for a 6 mo. contract position that can be indefinite. However, I'm thinking about turning it down and am wondering if it's the wrong decision given how the economy is doing now. :(

My reasons for turning it down is that I just started my job search (didn't expect to get one so soon) and I'm still waiting to be invited in for a final interview for my 1st job choice.

If you need to work, I would take it so at least you are bringing in money.

If something works out and a better option comes along, you can gracefully choose to cut ties with this employer.

People do it all the time.

And it can take awhile to get hired elsewhere so you should take that into consideration as well. It may take you a good 6 months to a year to find something so this could always turn into something good to put on your resume.

What exactly is IT project management? It sounds interesting...

I would if you feel it's not right for you & you have the luxury of time to look for the right position. It's tough to interview after you've started a new job.

If you can hold them off until you hear from your first choice, it would be better.

I'm in HR for a software company in the city - so I get the desire to be on LI. For what it's worth, I think it's easier when they're babies to be in the city as long as you have someone who can help you out with pickups.

There are alot of IT projects within any company but someone has to lead the effort so the project happens on time and doesn't slip through the cracks.

Some IT Projects include redesigning a website, converting to a new email system, upgrading to a new database version, etc.

It's an interesting job but as with any project management job it can get stressful.

My DH turned down an offer about 6 months ago because it was slightly less than what he was looking for. I was p*ssed to say the least. Fast forward to now, he was doing some electrical work but got laid off AGAIN. Collecting unemployment AGAIN. I say take it for now. The economy stinks.

Same here - I'm in HR and I get resumes from people and they last worked in 2007 - I'm like - hello?? I'm not talking about SAHMs etc. I'm talking people who have been collecting UI a LONG time, and it's running out now - and as a recruiter I look at their resume and question their work ethic.

with this economy it is soooo hard for some people to get a job, I dont think it has to do with work ethic, you yourself talk about your husband being out of work for a long time and then finds something and then is back to square one.

One thing I'd say about taking the job even if you can afford not to work for a bit is that it shows the initiative to work even in a job that you don't necessarily want.

i've not been working for some time now and one question that always comes up is "what have you been doing". unfortunately i haven't had any opptys to do even contract work, and i've been told that even doing contract work would look better than just job searching. I'd say take it as long as it still allows you to look for a permanent role. KWIM?

Thanks all, a part of me wants to take the job because it is a tough economy and a big gap in the resume will not look good.

However, I prefer to work parttime so I can be around for my 20 mo. old a few days a week.

I'm also collecting unemployment for another 4 months so was hoping to find something else while I still have the chance to do so. If I don't like the job and decide to quit after 1 month I won't be able to get unemployment anymore...

It's hard to jobhunt when you have to work 9-6pm.
