would you/did you buy ILs or your parents house?
jsut curious... DH and i bought my ILs house this summer. our first house was a small rancher. it was plenty big enough for just two of us, and we were planning to add a second floor on before we had kids. BUT, then FIL ended up getting transferred, and offered to sell us their house. its twice the size of our first house, and its in a nicer neighborhood in a better town. so we went for it! i'm glad we did it, but it also comes with its own set of problems ( when ILs come and visit, they forget that its not their house anymore , and since DH grew up here and is used to it a certain way, it takes a lot of convincing to get him to change things). just wondering if anybody else did this, too...

My IL offered their house to us. It was in Bethpage huge house on a corner. My husband kept trying to get me to do it but I couldn't. I knew when they came to visit it would be "her house" If I changed things she would be annoyed. And in all honesty they were going to charge us full price wth
Heck my MIL comes to my house and moves things she once came here and moved all my towels to a different closet it took me 45 minutes to find them and then 30 minutes to move them back

OOH, MAN!! she moved your towels?! thats just not cool! yeah.. she definitely would have been even worse if you had bought "her" house from them!! we've been lucky so far- ILs have been great with everything we've changed so far, and especially MIL keeps saying " its so great you're making it your own". so thats good. i hear ya about the full price! FIL tried to do that to us, but DH put the smack down ( yup! he's a spoiled only child!). so they gave us money off, and since they didn't have a mortgage on it anymore we are just paying them directly, so they gave us a good interest rate, which saves us $$. so its all good so far!

Re: would you/did you buy ILs or your parents house?
Yes, and we had a lot of the same issues with them still acting like it's their house, snarky comments when we make changes, etc. We've made a lot of changes but it will always feel like MILs house to me. DH says it doesn't to him since it's so different, but he can understand what I'm saying.
We're starting to look casually for something we really love and then put this one up on the market. We're not in a rush b/c there are 2 other houses on our block that have been up for sale a long time - one for a year now and one for 6 months - so we know it's not the right time to try to sell.

I don't think I would ever buy my Il's house. My parents house, maybe, but not anytime soon. My mil would never let me forget that it was her house, and i'm not really crazy about their house anyway.

Yes, we bought it. It was a weird transition first where she didn't necessarily 100% give it up (she still had stuff here etc.), but after about a year, she has adjusted to her new life and doesn't even ask about the house.

My in-laws have the same house as we do, so no I wouldn't buy theirs. But I would buy my parents' house for the right price. It needs a LOT of work, but it's in a good neighborhood with great schools.

heh, would never be able to afford mom's house
as for DH's parent's house, its a nice home, in a relatively quiet neighborhood, but traffic in that part of brooklyn is CRAZY and the subway service is unreliable

No, I don't think I could. I'd want to start fresh in my own house . However, if I loved the house and they were giving us an awesome deal - I think I'd adjust
