Do you have experience in this area? I would want to work for the company first, to really get a feel for the company, the product, and the location. Then I would want to do my own market study and look at the competition. I would really do my own homework and not just take their word for things. With that said, I have a distant family member who owns many dunkin donuts locations and he does phenomenally. So can you make money, yes, but you really need to know what you are doing. He went to college for it. He grew up in the restaurant business and married into a family that had other restaurant franchises who could help with the first seed money. So unless you have experience in the franchise area already that is the kind of competition out there.

I always think about it. I would love to do it if I had the capital for it.

I wouldn't even remotely consider this unless I had extensive experience in the industry already.

ie: having restaurant/food svc. experience if you are buying a food franchise.

My friend and her husband did it about 10 years ago and did great. But, it was A LOT of work.

They eventually sold but, did well.

In addition to what everyone is saying about doing research the francise itself would matter to me. Some are very lucrative and there are strict restrictions to opening another within a certain distance--do you mind sharing the francise?

It would truly depend on the franchise. The big, well-established franchises require extensive product and market knowledge plus tons of capital. If you're talking about a small, local franchise, I think I'd be more skeptical.

Thanks Ladies... its not just food/restaurant. Its a family activity center - that's centered around wellness.
Place were moms/dads can bring kids newborn till about 3yrs and do activities (swimming, playtime etc..) and also have some parent time.(yoga, coffee bar etc) There is a healthy cafe... that's the food component.

No I don't have experience and I know that is one of my fears... I guess I am just looking to get more info on the franchise and how it works for them...I am not jumping in and signing anything... As many of you have pointed our - I need to do my own market analysis and research... just getting info from them. At least that's my intention....

Don't know anything about franchising, but based on your description, this sounds like a great idea - and something that people would be anxious to try

It does sound like a great idea however, I would warn you that will take an immense amount of time and dedication to operate. You will be there 24/7. I briefly owned a franchise that was much, much less complicated than what you are describing and it was a nightmare. If you don't have any experience running this type of business I would say don't even consider it. And I would be weary of any new, unproven franchise concept. Find out what you are actually getting from the franchisor that will make it worth everything you are paying to become a franchisee. If you want to FM me feel free. Opening the franchise I did actually put me into what I call my deep dark depression days. I would sit in my car and cry every morning. Not to say it's not for everyone but it certainly wasn't for me, and for reasons that I never would have even considered!

Re: Would you or have you ever considered investing in a franchise?

I was in negotiations to buy a Ralph’s franchise a few years ago but the price was too high and for something only allowed to be open 8 months out of the year. And rents are really high right now. Also the location was far from my house. It is something I still think about but I am waiting for the right opportunity.

The owner still hasn’t sold and it seems to go on and off the market every year.

I agree with the other poster about learning the industry the franchise is in. I worked for a mom and pop deli for 7 years so I know a little bit about food service. But I learned the most from speaking to owners of other Ralph’s locations that weren’t for sale.

My dad did this over 20 years ago and he's still there! He left a high paying job and jumped right in when myself and siblings were teenagers. He knew NOTHING about the business and there's A LOT to learn in it. It is a lot of work but he wouldnt change it if he could. The franchise is all over the world though so he had a lot of support. He doesn't make a lot of money but he's been living well with it. My mom has helped him every single day from day 1 too. I still help out when he gets in busy seasons too. I love how we can all work together there! Of course they have had their ups and downs though.

Absolutely no harm in going to talk about it!
